Yea I would have loved to hear what Nirvana would have made after In Utero. I just think by that point Kurt was tried of making music.

Neurosis!
I listen to a ton of modern music, but I rarely ever know what's popular at all. I can mark the month when my whole life changed I started being mindful of independent music (both really independent and indie in the sense that they're on a branch of a major label). I think most everything I hear on mainstream media is shit. The rock stations play shit. The pop stations play shit. The rap stations play shit. But there's a vast world out there of great music in it's infancy if you know where to do some looking.
God bless cheap, intimate, indie rock. Just got back from seeing !!! in Philadelphia with an all day/night DJ poolside for a scant $12. Didn't even have to pay for parking, was with my favorite girl in the world. We have a list of 13 shows we want to go to between now and the end of the year and only 2 of them are more than $20.
My friend is like... Jonah's buddy. He saw him at a sanctuary show in Philadelphia (one of the main places to see any indie rock is 1st Unitarian Church on 22nd street) and he e-mailed him before the show saying it would be cool if he played something, so Jonah did. You can also pay him like $125 to record a song for you. Whatever it is you want. It's not exactly cheap, but it's fucking amazing if you're into him. I'd love to have a personalized song from any of my favorite artists. My Jonah was Elliott Smith. I did get to see him live once, but it was like 3 months before he died.
My buddy Leo was a roadie/bass for The Catheters for a good portion 96-04. Pretty good punk shit and he's doing vocals for another group now.

Not even doom music can make modern rock good. I see what is in the market and just wish it was 1992 again. I mean sure you can find good music today but you have to go out of your way to. I just miss the creativity of the 90's today's music is too "commercial" but I guess that is how mainstream music will always be.
Rock kind of died around 1994. Its coming back, but it seemed to lose all its momentum back then. I personally think that Cobain's death was one of the primary causes for the collapse as Grunge (I'm going on a limb to say grunge would have been the main '90's music genre, like how the 80's was metal). Also the rise of the pop boy/girl band craze also appeared around that time which didn't help much. Far too many rock bands nowadays are trying to blend the two genres and it sounds tacky.
I was a huge Nirvana freak in high school (had tons of bootleg/concert/import CDs). I don't really care for them as much anymore, though. Either from being overplayed on the radio or just the fact that the music is really basic (go go power chords). Shit, some of Krist Novoselic's bass lines were two or three notes just repeated over and over through the whole song (see: All Apologies).
Favorite band now that came from the 90s? Definitely Radiohead. Thom Yorke can fucking sing. And play guitar. And play the piano. The whole band is just incredibly talented. I kind of got turned off from them after Kid A when they were experimenting with electronic sounds, but it's grown on me. OK Computer is still my favorite album, though.
Honorable mentions would include Foo Fighters, Floater, Placebo, Alice in Chains, Sunny Day Real Estate, and of course the obligatory Tool (even though 10,000 Days was disappointing compared to everything else they've done). I've even started to take a liking to Green Day over the past few years (I wasn't much into their early punk-type stuff).
I'm kind of iffy about Soundgarden, though. I absolutely love Down on the Upside, but I don't really care for Badmotorfinger or Superunknown. Just about everything Chris Cornell has done since I've hated, too.
I didn't start really listening to 90s music until after the 90s pretty much, but I used to be obsessed with early Green Day. 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (combo of their first two albums) was constantly in my CD player, as was Dookie and of course International Superhits.
I stopped listening to them for a while after high school. I didn't like their newer stuff as much, but I've gotten more into it as I listen.
In the 90s music vein..One of my favorite bands from the 90s, Pavement, are planning a reunion! It was announced today, so I have no idea what tour dates/places are gonna be but I would love to see them.
