Sonic Returns In New 2D, HD Game - Sonic - Kotaku

It appears that Sega may actually have been listening. After years and years of (mostly) awful 3D Sonic games, the company is now teasing something called "Project Needlemouse", billed as a return to the Sonic of old.

"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay" says Sega of America's Ken Balough. "Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."

The teaser clip's tagline reads "Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up", with Balough confirming the game will, rather than be a retro-remake, be an all-new game built in HD.

It'll be out in 2010. No word on platforms, but the "HD" bit certainly narrows it down. What do you think, Sega fans? Do you dare to hope?

I'm going to remain hopeful. You never know, stranger things than a good Sonic game have happened... And Sonic and Knuckles comes out on XBLA in a few short hours, and it has the lock on capabilities with the first three games (as long as you also own them on XBLA)!

Honestly I bet this will be like the new Super Mario Brothers which looks awesome. If its a sonic style copy of that game I will be quite pleased. Having 4 people playing at once in Sonic should be fun.

If it's a shared screen, it'll just be a case of the 3 others being offscreen at every point other than boss fights and bonus rounds.

Most they could do for multiplayer is do what they did on the DS Sonic's and just turn the game into a time-trial mode so the focus is on speed running, rather than keeping close to one another. (which isn't viable at the rate the 2d Sonics moved. Multiplayer would have to be split-screen to contain sanity)

Anyways, part of me wishes they'd hand this project off to a company (like Dimps, who did all the GBA/DS Sonics, which were good other than the annoying voice-overs) that knows wtf they're doing when it comes to designing 'fun' gameplay.

Sonic may have been the Sega mascot long ago, but it's lost it's appeal since they have failed to make a worth while 3D game out of the franchise. Do ppl even get excited anymore at the announcements of another Sonic game? I really doubt he carries even 1/4th the weight of a Mario, Metroid, Zelda, ect... title anymore

I just recently heard a rumor that this is one of the few title names released (allegedly) for the Dreamcast 2? Could just be stupid rumors and I haven't really looked online, but was just curious if anyone else knew?
