The linked parrying guide claims that parrying is checked before blinking. This is wrong correct? Otherwise there would be no need to avoid casting shadows. Or am I doing it wrong?

Yeah I capped mine out SAM tankin in Salvage (last 20-25 lvls).
You could just wait for your Mog Powered Martial Master to be in effect & then go back to Boyada Tree/Den of Rancor.
That's how 2 MNKs i know capped their guard. Martial Master ftmfw.
Maybe I need a refresher, as it's been years since I even thought about it..I've always understood it goes:
Evade>Parry>Shadows>Shieldblock/Guard>Hit
Am I missing / mixing up anything?
With this, I feel like SAM/WAR would make a really good skill-uper for parrying, as you could just rock Terra's with Seigan/3Eye up to negate a big chunk of the possible damage.
Martial Master is a lie.
1 hour (2 fish kebabs) 3 mandies beating on me the whole time, mobs 3-4 levels above my guard skill.
0 skills ups. Not .3, not .2, not .1, 0.000000...
Anyway, enough QQing, back to parry.
SAM/DNC earth staff -PDT and def food (I recommend fish kebabs, you probably won't have enough DEF to make good use out of tacos and they're much, much more expensive).
Between meditate, seigan+eye, and mobs constantly feeding you TP like mad (remember, store TP works when getting hit) you should have no problem staying alive. If you can find gavial cuisses (or hydra) and have Askar feet you can be fancy and have -25% PDT for a combined 45%.
With that and DEF food you shouldn't need a healer, remember seigan+eye works very well against fast-hitting or multiple enemies (compared to utsu).
Mobs to use would be, as others have said, mandies in tree are good, but if you're unsure of yourself crabs can work as well, they'll deal less damage overall so are a bit easier to handle.
In order to get to cap though you'll need to venture into Rancor or be willing to search out only EM mandies in tree (or EM-T crabs in tree).
((-PDT > Parry Skill > DEF/VIT) + patience) x patience³ = parry skill
My friend leveled up his parry by using Spartan Hoplon to gain Phalanx on Sam. The enhancement seemed to have decent performance. He equipped some weapon (i forgot what it was) with parry on it.
He then went to Monastic Caverns and fought champions which hit really fast but for low base damage... thus almost taking no damage. He would zone when he was out of resources because the zone was set in such a way that was convenient. The Champions go to level 72 which can get you fairly high up.
Tonight I'll try and get more parry skill items if there are any, and head out to Pucks and see what that's like, I do have RDM I can dual box for phalanx and support cures now and then. ^^ Just hope to finish this skill I heard its a difficult one to cap but definitely worth the time.
If you have a Red Mage friend go as Samurai and take on a tough Marid in Wajoam Woodlands, hold weaponskills until it pops 2-3 chigoes (don't touch the chigoes). Then waste the Marid; all that redux gear (no counter pieces) plus Phalanx II will make every hit a 0 against you easy. It's been a while, but you might want Blue Mage sub or atleast defense food. All you have to do is engage a leech or bee or any other mob but the chigoes, but don't swing at that new mob, just engage and face those chigoes, you'll parry attacks from the front regardless of what your locked onto. You should be good on chigoes until 254 because they are decent challange. The only hard part about this is the boredom of nothing happening but Phalanx II being casted every minute or two. And because each chigoe attacks like 3 times a second, I went from 210 to 254 in a few short hours.
those chigoes cap at 230 only.
First, Samurai Parry Skill = Ninja Parry Skill = Ninja Katana Skill; as in A-
Skill Caps/Ninja - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more
You can follow the first column in this link for A- skill. You can see mathematically that a level 72 decent challenge Chigoe will cap out at 254.
Second, you're in the wrong zone, not the chigoes standing around in Grauberg or in the Mire, which are level 62-66. I said attack Marids in Wajoam Woodlands to pop their chigoes, which are level 71-73.
Chigoes - FFXIclopedia, the Final Fantasy XI wiki - Characters, items, jobs, and more
The correct chigoes do cap at 254.
i wish i coulda skilled up my parrying on chigoesby the time it came out, i was already too high for that shit
just tank stuff in events. even on sam, i tanked HNMs anyway (no really, i was in tank pty) and it still took me a while. but i never had any dual boxed accounts or rdm or brd bitches to help me skill up on chigoes/puks/mandys/whatever. and by the time DNC was released, i was already capped![]()
if you are really motivated, just do it rukenshin style like the dude mentioned earlier. phalanx 2 and enough dmg reduction gear and they mostly hit you for 0's. ruke mentioned going from like... 80 something guard to 210 or so in about 2 hours of skilling up. that was nuts lol. i wish i couldve done that!
what ever happened to that guy...
PW did.
I was doing the doll FoV page to help my friend level his Rdm some (he doesn't party too much), had Martial Master last week... 0.4 and 0.5 parry ups are always fappable, even when you see 3 or 4 of them in a couple hours. Hit 221 before the MM went away.
Friend of mine who capped on Nin years ago said he always got great skillups off sea mobs, dunno why, just said they seemed to give em a lot more often.

Just saying
ANYHOW, in reference to Rukenshin:
I believe I sold his account. He showed up on Garuda about 2-3 weeks ago, and per the person on the account (his "sister") he has been busy with school.
The Rukenshin in question was wearing Amano, full Usukane aside from Baha Mask, Shadow mantle, Defending Ring, Smart grenade. In other words: Absolutely no buyable gear, purely R/EX. From what little I knew about Ruke, he wasn't the type to stand around in town wearing really stupidly matched gear just to show off "higher-end" pieces. So yeah, my vote is sold account.
I has a sad for our lovely Samurai. Goldo's beautiful bottom was forcefully taken from me by the evil's of SE, and then Ruke leaves!
Level it the same way you do Guard;
get a bunch of mobs attacking you at the same time while engaged with one you can't hit. Now, obviously this gets more and more dangerous as you go up in skill and I wouldn't try this method past 250 skill >_>
I used orcish champions in Jugner-S to cap my parrying as sam/dnc. It takes a lot of effort and is well worth the trouble.
Mai’s Parrying Skillup! | the StarOnion haha damn, nice to see it appeared here O.o
Well when I did my parrying, I never had a RDM mule, I used a WHM :O and sometime even just a Bard/Whm. I just dealt with whatever I got.
But sure, if you have the perfect setup, RDM with Phalanx 2 all maxed out, or like Rukehshin, just have a nice linkshell of peeps healing you, just so you can get all beat up by an army of Puck... is probably the coolest way to do it.
But if you don't have that luxury of 2box, you're better off sticking to EP/DC as long as you can.
---
On the side, I think having numerous easy mobs beating at you outweights getting beat up by a hard mob. The feel I get from parrying is like.. (example!!!)
dice rolled (1-100)
if (dice rolled = 1-99)
display "attack is parried"
else (hence dice rolled = 100)
-- pick randomly from (difficulty of mob)
-- .01 (if its only EP)
-- .02 (EP, DC)
-- .03 (EP, DC, EM)
-- .04/.05 (EP, DC, EM, T, VT, IT, Impossible to Gauge).
display "attack is parried"
display "parrying skill + (whatever was randomed from above, based on mob difficulty)
So tanking a harder mob gives you access to (0.5 skillups), but the way I saw when I did it was, the 0.5 had just the equal chance of being displayed as 0.1. Yes, I've spent hours getting beat by puck only to get a 0.1, and can really be disappointing.
But yea, having access to 0.5 from beating Tough or higher can make parry faster, just as long as you can stay alive and have no downtime.
The stuff I wrote, I did 80% of that skillup 2boxing a WHM, 20% as BRD/WHM. It's just as good.
Just Mai 2c
Sigh, at 250.2 parrying. These last 18.8 lvls is gonna be painful as hell. Get more damn skills up during Dynamis runs and other shit when I'm not even trying than when I actually do try.
