Just curious, why does it matter so much to some people that the president was born here or born to a set of citizens that met particular criteria? Patriotism is not genetic. Even if he were born on the moon I wouldn't particularly care. Being born somewhere else doesn't make it more certain that he's passing on national secrets or something. That doesn't even make sense. My birth certificate (I have THREE certified copies of it, NOT the original -- which iirc the STATE OF FL doesn't even have now, it's all electronic) does NOT have a raised seal, does NOT have a doctor's signature, and it is STILL an official, certified copy of my birth certificate. I was born in Tampa, Florida in 1983. My grandfather worked for Castro. If I'm legit, I'm damn sure Obama is too, because he has the same citizenship credentials as I do, and a way less shady family background. I've taken the certified copies, WITHOUT raised seals, to DMV, to the Post Office to get my passport, to the New York City courthouse to get my name changed... no one has ever questioned it, because it is a CERTIFIED COPY from the state of FL. They don't all look alike either! I got them each about 5 years apart from one another, and while they have the same basic information on them, they DON'T look alike in design, color or size. Does this make them invalid? Not according to the US Passport authority or the VA/NY DMVs, and imo they're probably more credible than you are.

Really though, I don't know what to tell you. My husband was turned away from the DMV in VA because his birth certificate, though it's a certified copy, has no signatures on it either and so wasn't considered certified enough to be reliable proof of identity. Official documents have got to have some kind of legitimate shit that can't be easily copied. Yours probably has some kind of watermark or some kind of unique thing to it that can be verified, otherwise anyone could just photoshop up any old document at all and run for president. My original birth certificate (which I have since found after getting a new copy) has a seal embossed in the paper, but my newer copy just has a cute little watermark and spiffy design behind the letters.

I'd also be willing to bet what's accepted as proof of identity varies from place to place.

In spite of a prior statement denouncing birthers, Ohio Republican Congresswoman Jean Schmidt appears to be a closet member.

You may remember this particular member of Congress from a 2006 debacle when she accused congressional Democrats and Rep. Jack Murtha (-PA), a former Marine, of being cowards for pushing for a timetable on withdrawal from Iraq.

Today, ThinkProgress published a video of Rep. Schmidt at a recent "tea party" outside Cincinnati, Ohio. In the clip, the Congresswoman is confronted by an angry constituent who demands to know why Obama is president if he's not a natural-born citizen.

While the cameraman appears to be pushed away, the audio did manage to capture a very telling response from Schmidt.

"I agree with you," she said in hushed tones. "But the courts don't."

Schmidt, you may also recall, went to great effort to avoid blogger Mike Stark, who had been chasing down members of Congress on capitol hill, asking them for responses on the birthers' allegations.

From the video, one could almost say she ran from Stark.

TP also notes that Schmidt's confession of agreeing with the birthers stands in contrast to her statement published by Loveland magazine, where she said:

"The President is indeed a Citizen of this country. I voted as a Member of the House to certify the vote of the Electoral College electing him as our President. I may not agree with his politics but there is no doubt he is our President and has my full respect as such."

So, which is it, Rep. Schmidt?

Something tells me she'll be running from this question for a long time to come.
