Actually, its technical use is to denote that something is not a metaphor, rather than an exaggeration. If you're going to correct someone on their language, make sure your own is up to scratch!

I guess my pet peeve is rather selective. I'm fine with using the non-original definition, but I hate it when people use it completely incorrectly.
