I was asleep, a senior in college at my apartment. I woke up to my radio alarm, and the first thing I heard was "Lower Manhattan is covered in dust, the World Trade Center has collapsed." I'll never forget that sentence.

I shot out of bed and ran to the living room TV. My roommate was in the kitchen making breakfast for him and his girlfriend. I said "Do you know what's going on?"

He said "We'll be hearing about it for years, right now I just want to make breakfast."

Of course the reaction is going to be different. If someone in your area is murdered, your reaction would probably be "oh that's sad". If someone close to you was murdered (parent, sibling, best friend, etc.), your reaction would probably be "ZOMG WHYYYY".

There's a diff between knowing the person/persons and them just being from the same place as you. I'd have the same reaction if it was some person in my neighborhood that after living here 21 years, have not once spoken a single word to them as someone in Europe.

Someone close to you =/= someone who lives in the same geographical region.

I remember being waken up by mom and her turning on the t.v. Think it was just in time to see the second plane crash. I had no idea what was going on for awhile thought it was a bomb in some random building at first. It wasn't until I went to school and the teacher started talking about it that I realized it was important. I remember he got out the map and tolded us it was probably an attack from the middle east.

Have to admit I've always thought reactions of some people of 9/11 are overly dramatic. I guess being Canadian I didn't feel the reaction as much. I remember I laughed when I saw my school selling how to deal with your emotions about 9/11 books.

I remember going to the cafeteria back in middle school. My best friend came back from a dentist appointment and told us. Came home, saw the news, was pretty much on every channel on the satellite.

Then I remember the opening of the war in Iraq/Afghanistan and all the shelling/bombing.

I remember i was at 7th or 8th grade and we were taking a class when someone came by and just plane out said that the twin towers were attacked.

For the next few weeks, i remembered all the comments about Muslims beating their wives, cutting off clitoris, being savages that went around the school. It's kind of funny when you look back at it. And as for the patriotism comments, i also consider it funny that though many atheists waste their time with an institutional fossil like religion, they pay no mind to one of the lead producers of indoctrination and facilitator of deaths throughout the world. Loyalty to the nation-state and its enterprises. You don't need religion now a days to stroke genocide, just remind people how these people are the enemy of your blessed country and watch people turn into animals.

I think you're mistaking his reaction - it was not, at all, that he didn't care. He understood the gravity of the situation. He "got it", and also understood that media coverage, the conversations of his peers, politics, etc. etc. would be dominated for months and years by it.

He just wanted one more breakfast with his girlfriend before that all began for him. That's how I interpreted it.

No I appreciate his wit in the midst of the crisis and his wisdom to foresee the effects. Not being sarcastic or cynical at him at all.

I was sitting and bs'ing with a teacher and drinking coffee/sometimes watching msnbc or cnn or something as i normally did before heading to my second class of the day when they switched to cover the story about what happened with the first plane. The 4 of us there thought it was crazy, but don't think any of us were really paying attention to what was being said until the second plane. Then when they switched to footage of the pentagon smoking I think we all shared a total holy shit what the fuck is going on moment. I think we all ended up sitting there just watching the news dumbstruck for the next 3 hours.

Where i lived at the time was about 15 minute drive from an international airport, with constant fly overs. Was a very eerie couple of days while the planes were grounded.

Wow is it really that hard to at least show some respect for the people who died on 9/11? You complained earlier about making a big fuss when there are other events that warrant equal memorials, but yet you post something like that picture.
