Patriot Day 9/11

11th grade trip to the capitol for AP Government class. We were touring Senate Russell Building at the time with an aide when the first tower was hit. When news of the second tower and pentagon being host, we were being evacuated and brought back to our buses. I had never seen my teachers ever as scared as they were that day. When giving roll
on the bus to make sure everyone was there, they actually cussed out a group of kids in the back because they wouldn't stop making noise while they tried to get everyone attendance.

Once made it home and turning on the news, shit hit home when saw the full extent of what had occured.

Was in 9th grade making up a math test in the hallway when about 12 teachers all burst into the hallways at once. I probably knew before most of the school did and it was quite a bit harder to finish my test at that point.

I was in town at the time shopping with some mates, was about dinnertime (UK) and the whole place was dead. Didn't even realise til we walked past Dixons and everyone was crowding round the telly's. Swiftly got the bus to my bf's where I spent the next few hours shitting myself in case WW3 broke out :/

Interesting, a view from another country. Can you tell us the vibe you were getting from fellow UK'ers? Were people upset or were there people going "US got what they deserved."

I'll never forget the footage I saw later that evening of people dancing in the streets in countries like Iran etc. Made me sick to my stomach.

Yeah, I was home drinking coffee and watching the Today show. They were showing footage of what they thought was a small airplane crash into one of the World trade center towers. Then out of nowhere the second plane crashed. I could believe what I just saw on Live TV.

I'll never forget that, ever.

I was doing the exact same thing. My phone started going off like crazy a few minutes later... I guess somebody in Chicago news decided to mention something about the sears tower being next, and the city went fucking nuts.

Everyone was shocked, i remember clearly. Everyone always thought the US was invincible type thing. I know we have banter with you guys "aah fukin yanks" n all that but no one wants to see people from any country die like that. Absolutely ridiculous.

I was a nervous wreck I actually watched a documentary the other night, 102 minutes of footage taped together from start to finish. There was a point where the 2nd plane flew into the tower and the person holding the camera just screamed. I felt sick :/

My wife was at work during all of this, I remember calling her, and giving updates to her and her co-workers. Reporting to them, and hearing their reaction was weird, because it was like they didn't believe me or didn't want to believe me.

tbh, I think it was a precaution against privates doing something stupid to a drill sergeant or another private who would happen to make an unknowingly-bad comment. Predictions were that tempers and emotions would be running high if people found out, and flaring emotions + basic training + live ammunition + occasionally stupid 18-year-olds = a situation best avoided.

My sister and some various friends were in downtown Chicago that day. I kept getting phone calls coming in from each of them that were getting cut off because of the massive cell phone traffic, and when the calls actually made it through you could hear the people freaking out in the background, people running to the trains, people screaming in the background for taxis like it was life or death, the phone cutting out every 5 minutes... gives me chills to remember that. And they weren't even in New York. My roommate's sister was living in Manhattan at the time, and he couldn't even get her on the phone for over a day. It was just all sorts of fucked up.

My sister was living in New York when it happened and worked quite close to the WTC's when it happened, was fucking shitting bricks for hours trying to get hold of her. Spent the entire day on the sofa watching the news.

I was in 8th Grade history class, i remember our teacher running in the room crying and turned on the TV and we sat there for the remainder of class period watching the news

I remember I did have one class...the professor decided not to cancel it that day because "that is what the terrorists would want us to do to disrupt our lives." I guess it was a true statement, but student's minds were just not into the lesson that day.

I always questioned that judgment call of my professor.

Had just finished classes, went over to a friend's to play some vidya gamez. Friend's mother called from downstairs to tell us to come watch the tv, saw the second plane hit live on CNN. :/
Friend and his family were dutch (in Belgium because of their job in Brussels for EU), we were all shocked. Had the same feeling about the US being 'untouchable', but don't think any of us could've imagined an attack carried out in this manner.

Next day we had a schoolwide minute of silence, and we discussed it a bit in some classes. Everyone was disgusted at the cheerful reactions from the middle east later that evening.

I remember being rather apathetic and more or less just scared that it was affecting so many other people's demeanor. I was in 7th grade at the time and I remember sitting in homeroom at the end of the day. We were talking about it and someone asked what floors were destroyed. The teacher said "all of them," to which the kid responded "then my uncle is dead."

I don't think I'll forget that response and exactly how it sounded as long as I live

I've recounted this story every single year...

I woke up somewhat reluctantly, knowing that I had to go to court for a driving under suspension hearing. My roommate had just woken up when I left. I remember how beautiful a day it was - bright, clear blue sky with no clouds, a slight tinge of cold to the late summer air. I pulled into a parking lot a few blocks away, and sat listening to Dee Snider's morning show on the radio for a few moments. Just before I got out of the car I remember him saying with a slight laugh in his voice as if it were a joke "We just got some report that a plane crashed into a building in New York City.. *chuckle* we'll be right back."

Pre-session proceedings were supposed to start at around 9.. but didn't. In fact, we didn't see anyone until the bailiff came in at about 9:30 and told us about the planes crashing into the WTC. Some folks took out their walkmans and listened to the news, some talked on their cell phones, despite the courtroom ban on such devices. By 10:30 we had been released - all government buildings were being shut down and secured due to what we now knew were attacks.

I went to work, and couldn't stop watching the news all day. The hard-driven sales guys who owned the company (security alarm sales) kept discussing how this would be good for business. I kept thinking how sick their motives were. We left early, knowing no one was going to take a telemarketing call on this day.
