It may differ by state (assuming you're US) but if your friend is going to be leaving a ton of stuff there, after the foreclosure the bank or new owner may also have to initiate eviction proceedings and obtain a judgment against your friend in order to take possession of the property and toss out that crap.

usually goodwill won't pick up, and there's a limit to how much you can donate to goodwill per day iirc

smaller thrift stores sometimes do pick up though, here in RIC the Diversity Thrift Store will pick up, but the SA and Goodwill won't.

Ive got a Q that kiiinda runs along the same lines. I have a super lazy roommate. As in, ignores bills until they are shut off lazy roommate. Hes always getting unmarked, legal, collection notices but I didn't think they amounted to much until recently.

Long story short, I went through his stack of mail to try to find our electric bill. Among the late electric i found late cable, 2-3 court document notices for collections, another couple collection notices, 2 bank notices from 2 different bank, also a court ordered document ordering him to pay nearly 1800 to our old apartment property management.

I'm getting out of the apartment asap. Told him I want a place of my own now that I can afford it. Question is whats the worst that can happen to me with all this amounted debt? Its not like defaulted loans... Its actually money he legally owes around... I assume garnishing wages is a start. Anything worse?

Is your name on anything? If you are, then you're held responsible. In terms of where you live, if you're a leaseholder there are certain things that can play out. Some areas have it where if there are two leaseholders, each one is responsible for 50%. Being marked as just an inhabitant (the word for it is completely escaping me right now), I believe you're not responsible.

questions: who is on the lease?

also, how do you pay your roommate?

if you're both on the lease, and you can prove that you pay him 50% for everything, (i.e. bank statements) then you should be ok. If you paid cash, you might be fucked.

Got the easy way out. Lease is up in 30days, told him I am not renewing. All these bills thats hes racked up are all in his name and do not pertain to anything between us (lease, etc) All the utlilties are in his name, the lease is in mine and he pays me cash.

Guess I shouldn't worry about this now. Something came up work related, and now I'm out in a month.

I'm still curious how far he can get him self into trouble with owing probably thousands of dollars all over the place.
