Oh please. Company X wouldn't have made 2-3 more movies if they lost money on the first one. The backstory doesn't mean shit.

It's not that they can't add lore. There is still plenty of room for something like you mentioned. What I'm saying is that it's going to feel disconected from the first three movie in the sense that it wasn't planned in the original story. It's hard to weave a story when the source material is already completed and solid.
If you want an example, take any Disney classics, and watch the sequel they made. They rarely destroy what was established in the original, but none of them feel right either (except 1 or 2 maybe).
Personaly, I think the better route for this movie would be to involve the big power in Europe. We know there was many war/tension around that time, and there is enough material there for Jack Sparrow's quest to actually have an impact on the whole world.
Jack sparrow starts the french revolution and inadvertently creates america!
Sequels make money. If you like movie A, you're probably at least going to give movie A's sequel a shot. Whether its shitty or not doesn't matter, you've already paid to see it. Spiderman 3 is a perfect example.
Book series in particular are also huge cash cows for film studios. They're already written and already have huge fan bases willing to see movies made off of them. Even the fanboys who absolutely hate the films will (a lot of the time) continue to see them in order to rant about how much they hate them, how much they fucked that shit up, etc.
Try and remember that film studios are, in fact, in business in order to make money before you make another really fucking retarded comment.
This is almost as bad as hearing that the script for Indiana Jones 5 is in the works.
I loved the 1st Pirates movie. Let it go already.
About the only thing I would have tolerated with a 4th movie when I first heard "Yes movie, no Bloom or Knightly" was perhaps a prequal that explained how Sparrow got the Black Pearl from Davey Jones, how he came across Calypso's compass, and the mutiney by Barbossa.
This is just going to be a hard movie to watch, since the first three did a very good job of wrapping up the story being told.
I'm ever hopeful, but I am also going to buy the book and read it. It's a fairly acclaimed book from the small research I've done. With any luck it won't translate horribly into a Disney movie.
A while back before summer I thought to myself about Pirates 2 and how the ending was so much of a cliffhanger and I couldn't wait for the 3rd one to fucking come out. I then jumped up and asked my GF when does the 3rd one come out??? Can't wait for it! She told me we'd already watched it.....
Apparently it was so shitty I completely blocked it out from my memory....
1 was awesome, 2 and 3 were shit. Same thing with The Mummy series, I expected the third to be awesome, because, well fuck, they gotta realize how badly they fucked up on the second. I mean come on, they even got Jet Fucking Li!
I pretty much rank this one the way I'd rank the 3rd Mummy. Except it's probably even worse. Because instead of being one movie that pisses me off, it'll be 3 movies that piss me off.....
Once again I hope I'm wrong, but I probably won't be... Maybe the first one will be good so they can pull the fan-base back in. But no way they can make an awesome trilogyEspecially after seeing what went on in the 2nd & 3rd ones....
P.S. Would love to have Kate Beckinsale in this movie too. She'd make a good pirate wench, and cleans up nicely.
You all keep bitching about Pirates 2 and 3.
1. What the fuck was wrong with Pirates 2? Its easily my favorite of the three.
2. Pirates 3 wasn't a godawful movie either. They tried to squeeze too much in and it got tied up and confusing. Was it a good movie? Not really, but it wasn't a terrible one either. It was pretty thoroughly mediocre. Not nearly as awful as, say, Spiderman 3.
Character development only happened once in the series anyway. Jack Sparrow was introduced and developed in Pirates 1.
In Pirates 1, when faced with danger, he ran whenever possible, backstabbed everyone he came across, and then in the end it was shown he's a good person at heart and he came back to save the day.
Just like he did in Pirates 2.
And then again in Pirates 3.
He'll no doubt do the same thing in Pirates 4 as well.
Pirates 2/3 is almost a whole new adventure, just like what Pirates 4 is going to be. How is this announcement any different then the announcement of Pirates 2/3?
I think a prequel would've been more exciting. It would explain a lot about how the Black Pearl was originally called the Wicked Winch and belonged to the East India Trading Company. Jack who was employed by the EITC was to sail the ship with "precious cargo" to some destination. When he found out the cargo were slaves, he freed them which pissed off Lord Beckett and ordered the ship to be hunted down and destroyed. Jack was labeled a pirate and the ship was lost at the bottom of the sea. It was at that point Jack made a deal with Davy Jones to resurrect the ship from the oceans depths and be captain of the ship for 13 years in return for Jacks soul.
George Lucas NOT rely on the same story telling formula?
You're out of luck mang
Indy 5 means more shia ladouche and while I normally don't mind him, this is the one where Lucas said he planned to shift it over to him and I do not want to see Indy 6+ possibly without harrison.
They should incorporate Jack's father in more :> George Teague so actually Jack's father is Blackbeard.
Plus Keith Richards was awesome.
I think this movie is going to be entertaining. Good? Quite possibly. Tired, old, bad and being milked? Also quite possibly. I too was hoping for a prequel, but I'll settle for more crazy Jack adventures regardless of how they come about, provided it's entertaining (and it will be, I'm sure).
For the record, I think I liked the 3rd one the most, but it's tough between 1 and 3. 2 was just ok.
Will Johnny Depp Ditch 'Pirates 4' For Dick Cook? - Cinematical
found it on another board but dunno if its just hearsay or actually a possibility
