Video Cable question (PS2 Component out to VGA in)

    I just bought & received this monitor: Newegg.com - Hanns·G HG-281DPB Black 28" 3ms Widescreen LCD HDMI Monitor 500 cd/m2 800:1 Built-in Speakers - LCD Monitors

It only has input for HDMI and VGA (D-Sub). Because of the limitations on inputs, I was going to try and connect my PS2 to the VGA port. It comes with an included VGA male to Component male cable:

My concern is this: If I buy a set of PS2 component out cables (For only $3.12 each when QTY 50+ purchased - PS2/PS3 Sony Playstation Component cable | Play Station)

and use a coupler like this to connect it to the male VGA to D-sub converter (For only $0.38 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 3-RCA RGB Coupler for Component Video Cable Extension | RCA Adapters)

am I running the risk of shorting anything out? I only ask because I somehow shorted out my graphics card a year ago when I used a DVI-D to VGA converter that was intended for my dad's Mac mini with my PC (didn't have my monitor at home at that point).

    Thanks guys!

I doubt it would be a problem. Might need to change the color output mode of the PS2.

I find it surprising that you shorted a card via an adapter.

That was the only explanation I could think of. I'd hooked up the computer to the monitor using my DVI-D cable + DVI-D to VGA adapter (older monitor). BIOS came up the first time I turned it on, but then it went to a black screen, and from then on nothing would come on, even when I plugged it into my normal monitor. I ended up sending the card back to Dell (one of the few times I've been glad to have a Dell).

There is an official VGA cable for the PS2 that was part of the Linux Kit. It has the same pinouts as a component cable on the plug that goes into the PS2, but you have to set the system to output RGB color encoding instead of Y/Pb/Pr. Also, only software that outputs progressive scan will display on the monitor, meaning you can't do PS1 games or the main system interface with the monitor.

If you want everything to display on the monitor, you really want a VGA box or HDTV input card for your computer.

I don't see why your original post wouldn't work. I imagine you had trouble with the DVI-D cable because that is digital only and VGA is analog, unless it was a DVI-I cable and adapter, then I don't see why it would have shit the fan.

Don't think this will work, something about how the ps2 outputs video, which is why you see all these expensive vga boxes and converter disks for HD output.
I could be wrong though =P
