I don't think Americans are bad, aside from the extreme patriotism. The racism can be easily explained and their attitude is probably due to the fact that they have an incredibly large income disparity and very varied population, which is why they come off like pricks. The US government however, is a monstrosity.

Granted, patriotism was really at its apex in the 19th to early 20th century, and it seems to be declining as a useful tool, but it does not seem to garner the same criticism as religion even though religion has lost most if its unifying power since the at least the 1500s.

You can even tell that religion has failed to unify the muslim world, and yet is is treated as the biggest issue in the Middle East. When we hear of the evils of religion, we always hear of the middle east, even though one of the issues that really ignited islamic extremism was the dictatorships that went along disguised as democracy and progress. When the most relevant fact in that region is the fact that the nation-state project completely failed as a means to unify the middle east, and it is currently in limbo.
