any PS3 thats backwards compatible to PS2 should play FFXI, all PS3 patches for FFXI have been done, so I dont see why it wouldnt work ? Only problem is any PS3 that seems to have been built within the past year or so doesnt have backwards compatibility, which fucking fails.

    PS: sup ^_^

    Yes, it's required.

This is true to an extent. High end HDTVs should not have this problem. However, your average HDTV will. SRK had a pretty good bit about this.
Well now you've just made things confusing.

I remember reading an article a while back stating that the entire purpose of making the PS3 as good as it is was so that people wouldn't have to buy a new console for a while. In other words, at the time the article was written (Not up to date on gaming information atm), Sony intended on the PS3 being the future rival to whatever Microsoft would put forth.

Yeah, the processing power is definitely there. Imagine the types of games they'll be putting out once the PS3 is nearing it's end. When the PS2 came out they had "The Bouncer" compare that to "Gran Turismo 4" or "Final Fantasy XII"

Is Microsoft really considering calling the next Xbox the "720"?..... lol

Basically if you're looking for something to cater to playing both XI and XIV, you're kinda screwed at the moment.

The best bet would definitely be a very high end PC, because its anyones guess what ths syspecs for XIV will be.. but if you want it to look good and run smoothly, undoubtably a stronger GFX card with VRAM and better CPU is needed. A wait and see approach might be more advisable.
XI won't be an issue because it would work like a charm on any decent PC you buy today.

The next best bet would be PS3 with backward compatibility, tho that kind of limits you to the older 20/40/60 models. The good thing about them is you know they'll be able to handle FFXIV for sure, but how well they can is a different question. XIV will likely be a big game, so you'd want to have as much HDD space as possible (tho it is possible to actually upgrade your HDD capacity yourself).
FFXI would be able to run too, but apparently not as smooth as on the PS2, let alone on PC. But you won't really notice it unless you're doing laggy multi-man events.. such as Einherjar, Dynamis, Besieged or Campaign. The rest is ok.

Last 2 choices would either be to get an average PC or a PS2 (or a XB360) to play FFXI, but leave no option for XIV. Well, between the 2, a PC is better since you can do other things with it. PS2 is kind of obsolete now, so the only thing you're playing on it is FFXI, and since you have to get an older non-slim model, they have a higher likelihood of breaking down.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop for XIV too but I'm waiting for more info about the game, and also Windows 7.

yeah I made a post in the tech section about looking for a new computer was only going to drop about 700 but I'll probably end up putting 1000$ into to it so i dont have to worry about running aion/ffxi and massive amount of other random stuff lol

FFXIV for X360 is reportedly going to be announced at TGS 09 (link).

hmm.. i actually hope not.. xb360 limitations sounds like a sucky thing. and also, sony did announce their exclusivity only a few months ago.. not good on SE's reputation to drop exclusivity this quickly.

i wouldnt be surprised if SE just up and gave it to microsoft as well for the 360. i hate it thought because the 360 struggles enough as it is with FFXI

Accually the article you posted to isn't what I'm referring to as far as a problem goes, it is not the HDTV lag it's the fact that HDMI (at least from the PS3) does not support 480i which is the native resolution for the PS2, only certain games came with the ability to output in 480p or higher. What happens is that the signal has to be de-interlaced and then converted to progressive scan or higher depending on your resolution you choose for output. This adds some lag to the whole experience. The best example I can find of this is in Guitar Hero 3(I think) for the PS2 as it has both 480i a and 480p modes, if you play it in 480i mode it'll have a slight delay, if you move it over to 480p that goes away. Again its because HDMI doesn't support output of <480p resolution. Also I reccomend against using the unconverted feature on FFXI on the PS3, it washes out the graphics and further lags the game because the system must again re-encode the output resolution.

What unconverted feature? You mean smoothing?

Oops I mean the Upconverting, the upscaler, its under game options. PS?PS2 Upscaler. I run the Smoothing when I'm on the PS3 but am not sure on that as far as any lag there, again these changes won't make it run perfect but can help some.

Dont know if OP is still looking for a PS2 or not, but last time I needed one, Gamestop was the place to go.
    Gamestop.com - Buy PS2 System - GameStop Refurbished - Playstation 2

Don't forget to save your macro's to the server before you swap HDD's to the new ps2, dnas will not read the game from your hdd from the old ps2 and you will have to reinstall everything.
