I am a very bad scientist. I will do anything to make a human being feel better, even if it's unscientific.

someone asked me (oh god I'm so sorry to do this in your thread but it applies) what's so bad about religion making people feel good

my answer was, "presuming there is a correct religion, the seemingly harmless changes involving practices which actually disallow you access into the afterlife, while keeping you docile, happy, and generally well-liked is actually pretty insidious if you think about it"

it was a criticism on catholicism (amalgamation of pagan and christian beliefs matriarchal and patriarchal to molify the many belief groups at the time, Catholic Church was created approx 400 AD?) versus christianity in its core beliefs

tl;dr - if you're gonna do it, do it right (lose the saints, mary, and other excessive rites and ceremony, just pray to your fking god already, jesus fking christ man)

Don't worry. This is the right place for that sort of stuff.

A great swindle of our time is the assumption that science has made religion obsolete. All science has damaged is the story of Adam and Eve and the story of Jonah and the Whale. Everything else holds up pretty well, particularly lessons about fairness and gentleness. People who find those lessons irrelevant in the twentieth century are simply using science as an excuse for greed and harshness. Science has nothing to do with it, friends.

I thought scientists were going to find out exactly how everything worked, and then make it work better. I fully expected that by the time I was twenty-one, some scientist, maybe my brother, would have taken a color photograph of God Almighty — and sold it to Popular Mechanics magazine.
Scientific truth was going to make us so happy and comfortable. What actually happened when I was twenty-one was that we dropped scientific truth on Hiroshima.

I wish that people who are conventionally supposed to love each other would say to each other, when they fight, "Please — a little less love, and a little more common decency."

If you can do no good, at least do no harm.

I like this one. I often get asked how I can be an ethicist without being religious. I sit that person down and explain that morals and our innate ability to understand them don't come from religion. Sure, religion writes 'em down in a nice little book and puts in a few scare tactics etc. but ultimately they're universal, not tied to any religion or anything. I think the bible, for example, sums up some moral arguments very well in Jesus' parables/sermons (the "do unto others as you would have done unto you" is classic categorical imperative, for example), it's just all the cruft around the magical person/place in the sky that everyone gets all het up about. I'm sure most other religions are like this too (though I'm only familiar with Christianity).

Yeah, all of these are from his wikiquote page just because I am too lazy to crack open one of my books to get it straight from the source.

I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is."

Yeah, very true. You'll find most of the basic moral arguments and such in most religions, and virtually everyone has some form of the golden rule. I suppose the thing to keep in mind when he says everything is that he was head of the AHA at one point so he most certainly was not a religious man.

We Bokonists believe that humanity is organized into teams, teams that do God's Will without ever discovering what they are doing. Such a team is called a karass by Bokonon "If you find your life tangled up with somebody else's life for no very logical reasons," writes Bokonon, "that person may be a member of your karass." At another point in The Books of Bokonon he tells us, "Man created the checkerboard; God created the karass." By that he means that a karass ignores national, institutional, occupational, familial, and class boundaries. It is as free form as an amoeba.

A sum of money is a leading character in this tale about people, just as a sum of honey might properly be a leading character in a tale about bees.

Wars would be a lot better, I think, if guys would say to themselves sometimes "Jesus — I'm not going to do that to the enemy. That's too much."

I have been a soreheaded occupant of a file drawer labeled “Science Fiction” ... and I would like out, particularly since so many serious critics regularly mistake the drawer for a urinal.
