My favorite thing being the gravity wave handguns, imagine building a particle accelerator using similar principles to the ideas behind cosmic strings, and wrapping the accelerator into something handheld.
Then you cancel the Yukawa effects tying a quark into spacetime, making it roughly massless, and shoomp it around this coiled accelerator til it leaves the end of the barrel... suddenly gaining an immense amount of mass energy, producing a beam of what is more or less lased gravity.
The beam would bend spacetime around itself in an asymmetric fashion, basically making anything it hits fall in the direction it is aimed. Utterly ruins shit made of normal matter, and is so energetic it actually redshifts light around it so the beam appears as a perfectly straight thread of cherry red light.
Now put it in the hands of a Xeelee, and do they use them like guns? No, they wave them around like fucking swords! Starbreakers are one of the scariest implications of relativistic concepts besides black hole cannons, I think.

I wouldn't be able to watch any TV show, movie, or video game, if I allowed realism to seep in whenever someone mentions the word nuclear. I just laugh it off ~ it's great to go back and watch movies like Nuclear Twister or Resident Evil or play video games where one has to go behind the glass control room and remove control rods....

Basically worked on the concept of the FTL technology that was implemented in the book, that regarded the use of having a microsingularity projected in front of the spaceship in such a manner so that the ship is perpetually 'falling' into it. The missiles were basically just the drive component of that.

As for gamma ray guns, I still don't think I've gotten across the point of a gravity wave laser, the implications of an aysmmetrically curved projection of spacetime are immediately obvious to me, but I've been dealing with this shit for 20 some-odd years.
If you got your hand next to the beam, but didn't touch it, you'd feel gravitational drag in the direction the beam was aimed, that way would be "down" for the neighborhood of the beam.
Probably be fascinating to look down the barrel towards an active beam, all sorts of trippy ass distortion in the path.
If you could build a handheld gravity-distortion beam device powerful enough to hold light in place, why even bother with a laser at all? It would be able to cut people in half just by tearing their molecules apart, no laser needed!
Exactly, I only use the term gravity wave laser because it is the same basic concept as a laser (locking what is normally a broad range of possible wavestates into a single wavestate), except WITH GRAVITY.

And again, it's an implication of relativity, not a realistic one because I have no fucking clue how you'd uh... get the beam started, but assuming your technology was advanced to that point, the actual effects are simple enough to model.
Btw, that hypothetical about a star, if you make the core of a star heavier, it collapses, if it collapses beyond a certain point, it expands furiously... small stars go nova, large stars are worse.
