My money's on sloth as well, especially considering sloths live in central and south america. Probably has the same disease or similar to the last batch of "monsters" we had, that causes the hair to fall off. (wasn't it called mange?)

Those claws on it's hands and feet are a dead giveaway, as are the long limbs and facial structure.

They weren't throwing rocks at a corpse, they killed it then threw it back in the water then when people went back to check out what the kids killed they found out that it washed back up on shore and the birds basically picked it clean.

But yea its just a sloth that lost its hair due to some water related disease if i recall correctly
