Fox should be blamed partially, but Dollhouse started really slow, and even now, it still give us occasional "filler-ish" episodes. ...I wish they would have worked toward the plot faster.

But yeah, friday night show are never going to works. It was the same deal with firefly.

If the show wasn't so filler-rific at the beginning it might have done better. I get the feeling if Joss was allowed to do the show the way he wanted too thing would have been better.

Out of a 13 episode season, 7 shouldn't be filler-centric. W/was the case first season and this season has also seen a good deal of fillers. Fill episodes are fine for certain genres, but a serialized drama like show can not rely on fillers to get through 75% of it's season

For Fox, they treated Dollhouse tooooons better than they did Firefly. With Firefly, they aired them out of order, pre-empted episodes without notice and changed days constantly. They also did practically no advertising for it, the only reason I knew about it was because I posted on a Buffy board.

The only thing they did was Dollhouse was stick their fingers in too much the first few episodes. And put it on Fridays I suppose. I never watched it live because Fridays are not a good TV night for me. Hulu or DVR for the win.

Filler episodes themselves are not a bad thing, the Sierra episode, which I think was universally enjoyed by posters in this thread, was a filler. It had character development, but didn't advance the plot. You can have a series with lots of filler, it just has to be good. I'm not sure why people are surprised since this is how Whedon has done each of his other series.

Some filler is better than others. Stuff like the pop-idol episode is bad filler, while Sierra's story is good filler.

If it's real character development, it's not a filler. I think this episode was important, even if the main plot didn't progress much.

However, there is still too many episodes that change nothing (or introduce a tiny bit of new informations that could have been added anytime).

I would argue that any episode which doesn't advance the main plot is filler, but that's just semantics. The main point of my post was asking why people are surprised at the format of the series when each other Whedon series has been exactly like this. Tidbits of plot in each episode that finally lead up to a confrontation in the season finale.

Dunno, fillers are episodes that have no impact on anything. Topher changed greatly last episode, and im sure there will be direct consequence to this. Sierra didn't change much, but it was still a nice backstory (or w/e it was), and explained her character.

And yes, aside Angel, Josh show are always episodic, but they also get cancelled. Maybe he should get a clue that we like story heavy episodes and joke.

I don't know, when Angel started going off the episodic formula with the whole darla/connor/jasmine stuff, it was pretty fucking terrible, and got much better when it went back to form after the wolfram & hart takeover(though I'll admit the addition of Spike certainly played a part).

Connor himself was pretty terrible, but i liked season 3/4 the most. Spice/angel duo worked because it was funny as hell, but I thought the rest was shitty. I liked fred/wesley stuff though.

Wesley did get awesome after getting his throat cut, but we got the benefits of that in season 5. There were lots of episodes to like that season, Spike's confrontation with that crazy ghost, the puppet episode, Spike getting his body back and throwing down with Angel (for a cup of mountain dew), Wesley killing his father for Fred, Lorne's party etc. Also, Connor finally becomes likable, which was all I wanted since he got introduced.

I don't think I would enjoy Angel as much as I did back then though. I was young and innocent, and would take anything tossed at me, as long there was action.

After getting used to story heavy tv show/animes/games, anything that doesn't involve a solid plot or deep character annoys me. It wasn't terrible for sure, but I'm not sure if it the setting would still interest me.

Connor was easily the single worst thing in angel, bar none. And Julie Benz, despite my deep deep deep yearning to fuck her sideways, annoys the ever living shit out of me.

Seasons 1 2 and 5 of angel were fucking amazing though, and james marsters had a huge part in the last one.

Can anyone remember if in the episode where Echo is a mom, if the baby was a girl? It would be pretty ironic if that baby grew up to be the girl Echo gets put in in Episode 13.
