Award based on financial need. If you're under 24, they go by your parent's income. Since I don't have contact with either of my parents, I asked if I could use my uncle, who was my last legal guardian. They said they couldn't, but they could offer me a dependency override, which now counts me as independent. I don't have a job, so I get 0 income in their eyes and I always get the maximum amount.

You get half of your max award for the year each semester. It deducts your classes from the money then when about a month later the remainder is refunded to you.

For 2009, the max went up to like 5.3 grand. After classes are paid for I get about 2.5 for the year, half of it I got today, the other half I'll get after the next semester starts. You need to go fulltime to get the max award. Any award you get and are under 12 credit hours, you get half for parttime school.
