So I'm looking at a new computer and one of the options is a solid state drive. Are those worth the extra money? Might be a dumb question but oh well.

Only if it's an Intel drive, or one with an Indilinx controller. Anything based on a Samsung or Jmicron controller is going to suck.

Thanks.
Personnaly i don't recommand SSD for hardcore yet because afaik there arn'T alot with high capacity and they are pretty pricy.
But if you have money you can alwasy do this get a SSD to install windows from and get a normal HDD to put the data in
Personally I wouldn't be too bothered about an SSD. It all depends on what you want to use your computer for.
If you're having the computer built by someone like Alienware, the answer is most definitely no.
To be honest, even with the Indilinx drives getting better, I wouldn't spend my money on anything but an X-25M, and those are NOT the drives being used by custom system builders (at least, no one that I know of uses them).
They're going to charge you an absolutely absurd premium, and you're not getting remotely close to your money's worth.
No. Unless you want to pay $2-5/GB.
Good HDD's are down to about $0.08/GB, and are about 1/2 the raw transfer speed, and a lot slower in random access.
HDDs = cheap, fast enough for you. If not, RAID them.
SSDs = faster, excellent random access, expensive
