I'll help, cause Kaylia cybered me pretending to be a 12 year old physics geek girl, to expose my weak mathematical skills, and I may as well bring that out while we're talking about shit.

Alien, wait, what's the definition of alien?

Why did they call it 'The Thing'?

Maybe because both of them are strange, unfamiliar, and unknown?

Fuck, how hard is this to understand?
    You haven't seen em?

Go watch them, and remember my reason for identifying with these characters.

Trapped with a monster and you can't kill it or get away.

No I've seen them, I was asking you a question about their definition which you either tried to cleverly evade or sincerely questioned.

Also, again, same shit in Paranormal Activity to a T. Alien, demon, monster, ghost. Same shit son.

This is true in this movie's context... Katie (is that her name?) could not escape the demon... it just happened to fuck with her the most when she was asleep. When it got pissed off, it was everywhere. Even during the day. I have a feeling that if she'd left the house, it would follow her.

As far as a ghost haunt, they are usually confined to one location. They haunt an area, not a person. You can leave a haunted house, and odds are good you won't find objects moving themselves in your own house at night.

I think the point Max was trying to make was that some creature stories are told in a way that avoiding said creature is impossible. If you don't want to encounter a ghost, don't visit a graveyard after dark. If you don't want to deal with a monster, don't enter a mad scientist's laboratory. If you feel like avoiding the minotaur, stay out of the labyrinth, etc. BUT, if you're stuck on a ship in space with no escape pods and a promiscuous alien that wants to fuck your chest, then you're screwed. There's nowhere to go.

    IMO, they're quite different stories.

Pretty sure max is talking about the scariness of not being able to get away from your fear (monster, ghosts, bugs whathaveyou) and not the fear itself, and that's the point your missing. Or something like that... right?

No "son" it ain't the same shit.

In Alien and The Thing, they KNEW WHAT WAS IN THERE WITH THEM.

They wanted to leave but couldn't.

I watch most horror movies and I could fall asleep, it is trivial to me.

I watch Alien or The Thing, and I DREAD what is coming, I want to change the channel, I want to leave the room, I want to get away from it.

Could it be because my childhood involved having a monster I knew, who came home after work every night, and began rampaging around the house? Could that have made me unaffected by most "scary" things, and hyper affected by others?

My heartbeat shoots up when I see this shit.

Saw it with my bros last week, was pretty creepy had me saying WTF through out the movie. Being from the Caribbean where we grew up on this shit didn't help either. Girl in the movies had a panic attack almost stoped the film -.-.

This thread is so epic I just have to contribute:

With that gearing you would need something like 850hp and thanks to shitty aerodynamics a good 1-2 minutes in a straight line, probably with wind at your back, and a redline of at least 7-8k to hit 150 in that car if it wasn't reinforced way, WAY beyond the point where you'd ever drive it on the street.

    So, uh, no, lol.

You're a math nerd, so I'll make it real simple for you: a top of the line 80 Camero topped out at 120. Gearing higher = faster acceleration, lower top speed.

The car was hand built by a guy with a 3 speed dragracing tranny to run sub 11 second quarter miles.

You seem to have some grasp of cars, so let me make it simple for you: short rear end + stretch the tranny out enough to top out in 3rd gear after a 1/4 mile + big HP = fast times.

It was lowered, the front end buttoned up for better aero, and the guy was supposedly considering putting a turbo on it before he decided to just leave it naturally aspirated.

It definitely had a redline over 7k though, the engine was BEAUTIFUL to look at, considering he ripped everything out and put in a crate engine built up with ordered parts for dragging.

The cop guessed over 150, I don't know how fast he was going, but I know the only time I rode in the car we went from a standstill in a parking lot to 70 mph by the time I looked over at the speedo and realized my seatbelt wasn't on.

I then asked to walk the rest of the way home, he let me out and tore ass off down the street.

Incidentally, the real shame was that he didn't blow his head off with a gun and leave me the car with a note "Sorry about never being a real father, here's a bitchin' ride, son."

Honestly though, that car was scary as fuck, but then he did like em scary.

Wrapped one of those around a tree when I was 1, apparently.

Here's an example of what a bored guy who loves cars can do with a 1980 Camaro.

    http://americandreamcars.com/1980camarodragcar04.htm

Jackie knew a guy who loved building them, but couldn't race due to injuries from a crash, so he sold it to my dad for cheap, and started on another project.

Yea, it's a real shame when ppl take others down with em when they off themselves. If you're not gonna be of value when you're alive, at least leave something good behind when you're dead, instead of more problems...

I can see 135 maybe out of a street legal 80, if you were hell bent on blowing it up and hit nitrous with it at like 6k rpm. The whole thing would have to be built though, as in reinforced, not just the drive train.

Basically if it was designed to hit 150, it would be designed to do it (or get real close) in the qm, and it would be running sub 10's and not something you'd even want to take on the street.

    lol @ the pantera, I want one ; ;

This was not a car you'd want to take on the street if you were sane.

What I recall of the shit done to it was very similar to that link I posted.

1980 CamaroDrag Car - Motor is a Lunati built,
    383/625hp, professionally balanced
    and blue printed,
it has a Moroso deep sump oil pan,
a Lunati steel crank, Lunati cam,
    rolling lifters and valves,
has Dart iron eagle 2 heads,
Holley intake and holley 850 carburator
    with pressure guage,
    has Edelbrock air cleaner
    aluminum and valve covers too,
    has external gas regulator
    and electric fuel pump,
puller fan and flex fan too,
    MSD ignition and billet distributor,
runs on 113 octain fuel or
    turbo blue racing fuel,
turbo automatic 400 trans is built ,
with B and M rachet shifter,
    has scatter shield,
    drive shaft loops and
has detroit locker 10 bolt 8.5 with 4.56 rear gears
Car turns low 11s should do high 10s

Wasn't exactly that, but that is the same sort of idea.

Incidentally I don't recall there being any other vehicles in the crash, he drove into a railroad trestle on I-35.

North from W.Main St. to the railroad crossing about a mile up the road.

Max, what about Predator type movies? (and that ties into Alien a little bit...) Not necessarily "I know something is here but I cannot get away", but more "I know something is here with me, I just don't know where it is"?

I always thought Alien was bad more because you KNOW the damn thing is on the ship with you, but cannot find it, and because of that cannot really defend yourself (or know when to defend yourself, which makes you scared all the time). Being trapped with it just made the situation worse.
