    Windows 7 for students

Hey all, since the ACM MSDNAA store stopped carrying Windows 7, I thought folks might want to know about this:

    741

Basically, it offers Windows Home Premium to students (or those with a valid .edu address) for $30. It's valid through January 3rd. The articles I've read about it say Professional is also offered, but I haven't seen any option for that on the site.

EDIT: Apparently the Pro offer goes up later this month. Press release on Digital River:

Bump - If you click on the "Need to join your school's network domain? Click here" option, it lets you pick Win 7 Professional.

Don't see this, hoping my friend who has a license is able to just burn me a copy of the 64-bit Ultimate version they have access to.

Damn, I was trying to figure out how to get the professional. I already ordered mine though, anyone know if I can switch it somehow?

This looks like it's US only, too bad.

Nvm, I found a link to enter your school.

Well, if you joined the ACM MSDN AA you'll have access to various editions of Vista (as well as XP and other things, for $19)

    Edit:

    I think I am blind. I can't find this:

"Need to join your school's network domain? Click here" option, it lets you pick Win 7 Professional.
    Edit:

Nevermind, I found it. After you submit your school email. You'll receive an email that will link you to another page that shows this option.

Just ordered Windows 7 Professional 64bit + Disc. Yay!

64 bits are for pc with compatible CPUs, they also benefit the most if you have at least 4 gigs of RAM. 64 bits tend to be a bit more problematic due to some incompatibility issues and drivers... at least for XP and Vista, unless all is fixed in 7!

Well, the disc is for convenience. You can always just do the download and burn your own DVD or install from a USB flash drive.

What the, misunderstood your q there, Mero. Vui already answered, but it's nice to have a physical copy in case you want to do a repair or reinstall completely. It's way easier than doing it over the network, and less problematic (for me) to run an installation from a USB drive. It's also nice if you're too lazy to make a copy yourself

Does this have the upgrade from Vista option, or is it just a retail disc version?

Full versions can upgrade or do an install on a system with no OS. Upgrade discs require that you already have an older OS installed, but not too old (IE. you can't upgrade to Vista or 7 from 98), and the installer won't run if it doesn't detect an existing OS install from what it allows upgrades from. That's why upgrade discs cost less. Full version discs will work in any situation, but cost more.

Wow thanks for this info and link. Just purchased for my Dad since my school wouldn't give me a second serial through MSDNAA. (:
