Windows 7 for students

So is this basically a full version or an upgrade ?

If I buy a new comp, can I do a full Windows 7 install, or do I need vista first on it ?

The FAQ on that page is confusing.

All I want is to download an ISO and use it as a clean install.

MSDN AA access through whom? If its through ACM then I can vouch that this is false and it is not available. ACM is the organization that had the initial "six serials for Windows 7 Pro for $19" surge that resulted in it being removed.

Its hard to lie to your own University's computer science/whatever department that you're part of that department when you're really studying nothing related to the sciences. So, there goes that!

At least it was possible to lie to ACM about being a computer science major and get MSDN AA access, which is why it was so popular and promptly removed Windows 7.

Not all universities choose to be members of MSDNAA. Mine doesn't. And unless I'm much mistaken, often times the software available is dependent on major--if I understand things correctly, only STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics) majors (or occasionally those enrolled in a course that falls under one of those headings) are given access.

Yeah, only CIS department of my school has MSDNAA. As far as I know, even Business majors are fair game in ACM.

Wondering if I should cancel the home premium upgrade I ordered from MS (49.99) that comes with the discs and go for the Pro upgrade for $29.99... but it doesn't come with the discs so there isn't much difference... PLUS it's only the 64-bit version while the MS one has both 32-bit and 64-bit included.

I don't want to pay $30 just for one version and then I can't do anything if I don't like it. :\

I don't, it's just the MS version I bought has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Am I incorrect in assuming you can't upgrade from 32-64 without a full OS wipe?

You have to do a clean install if you want to go from 32 to 64, can't upgrade.

You have the option to order a Backup DVD as well for 13$ (total cost $42.99), which is what I did just to be safe. And the keys are only specific to the version of Windows (i.e. Pro, Home Premium, Ultimate), not the architecture (32 or 64 bit), so as long as you have a 32 bit copy of the same OS version (easy to find through a torrent), you can install that if you need to.

When upgrading from one version of windows to the next, you should always do a clean install anyways. Upgrading is something that Microshit has never really gotten right, and most likely never will.

Correct. You will just erase the old install when you start. Or, if going onto a new drive or a freshly formatted drive it will ask you to put in the disk of a previous version to verify your ownership.

Oh, well that's easy. I have OEM discs of Vista and XP. Cool.. I'll order this when I get paid then.
