Are you trying to upgrade to the 64 bit version?

You do know you qualify for a free copy of any version of 7, including Ultimate. Right? Just clearing that up.

Look online for a "Windows 7 Professional 32bit/64bit Dell OEM" torrent. Its preactivated for all modernized Dell's. Just install, done. No bullshit to mess with it.

Torrent that I used is on IPtorrents, completely clean. Ripped from a new OEM Dell disk.

Your model doesn't need to be listed. I have a XPS 410 and it cleared with just the install. No activation required.

Same model here, but since I can't use P2P files on campus, I cannot do the torrent stuff. However, my friend says that it's not a good idea to do 64-bit with a 2G RAM. I want to collect some opinions on this before I try to contact them and see if they can replace my 64-bit order with a 32-bit order. So, any thoughts on this?

Main reason to upgrade to 64-bit is to make use of more than 3.5ish GB of RAM, so if you're only running 2 you won't see a major difference. Won't hurt though, and if you ever plan on upgrading your RAM up to or over 4GB, it's necessary to have x64.

He was saying that it might start up slower or run slower. Is that true or will I just see no difference from the 32-bit? If it's the the former, I'll opt for the 32-bit, but if it's just no difference, I would rather not go through the hassle of trying to get the 32-bit.

Edit: Wasn't sure if I should interpret the "Won't hurt" portion as "It will work anyways" or as "It won't make your computer any less slower than if it were on 32-bit".

No, that isn't true in the slightest. Though if your board can't support 4GB or more it's not really worth it to upgrade to x64.

ok guys, i'm going crazy here, i can't figure this out for the life of me. Like I said earlier, downloaded from digital river (64 bit). I have vista 32. I can not, for the life of me, get the win-7-pretailer to unload properly. I tried the link, and says to unlock, but I couldn't find it. I moved all the files to an external hard drive, having the same problems. Please help before I smash something.

Having a little trouble understanding what you mean, what are you trying to unload? If you want to just wipe your system and install windows 7 (you should) just boot from the DVD and take it from there.

After downloading the components for windows 7 there should be three things: setup1.box, setup2.box, and win7-P-retailer-en-us-x64.exe, correct? When I execute the win7-P, I always get the error "make sure the file isn't a read only", which I do, and says something about not being able to save to the drive. I can't figure out how to work this. Or, are you saying to just burn those three things to a DVD and boot it from there?

There are problems with 32-bit upgrades to the digital river 64-bit version.

A somewhat inaccurate statement. You cannot run a 64-bit installer from inside a 32-bit OS. It doesn't matter where you got it from. You have to boot from the install disc (burn one if you only downloaded) and do a clean install.

It's not inaccurate. If you downloaded the BOX files from digitalriver you can never upgrade from 32-bit Vista to 64-bit Win7. It's a bug that the assholes somehow overlooked, since they don't give you the ISO to make an image from.

The only option he has is to order the backup DVD and boot from it.
