    What is your point?

Cave Story is pretty easy for 90% of the game, getting the floaty machine gun makes it even less interesting.

EDIT: Are you saying I am not allowed to criticize something because someone else likes it? That's so absurd.

If that's how someone wants to play, let them. Don't shit on their fun.

Because I am slapping the game out of their hand when they try right?

    Are you fucking intoxicated?

EDIT: For the simple folk who seem to be unable to think properly: I didn't say he "HAD TO DO IT." I didn't even say he "HAD TO DO IT IN ORDER TO HAVE FUN." I said "should." Qalbert you'd make a good troll if you weren't so genuinely dimwitted.

And the argument "Don't shit on his fun" is dumb. I sure hope you never encounter a full negative review of something you like in your life.

The original Rygar on the NES was kind of Metroidy.

The weapon and health upgrades are all required, can't revisit old maps, and the movement is limited to walking, running, rolling, and either horizontal or vertical jumping/climbing. Not being able to skip those kinds of upgrades, as well as not being able to upgrade how your character moves is a pretty big detail to leave out.

I wouldn't consider the original Prince of Persia games to be Metroidvania, and Blackthorne is a very good copy of those games (except you use a gun instead of a sword). Same puzzle mechanics, as well as hazards.

    By similar games, I mean:
    -Side-scrolling
    -Upgradable abilities/RPG-like progression
    -Big maps to explore
-I DO NOT mean platformers, nor do I mean contra/metal slug type games.

Here's what I've come up with so far, can anyone think of any others?:

    Shadow Complex (duh)
    Super Metroid
    Metroid Fusion (does this count?)
    Metroid Zero Mission (same?)
    Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
    Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
    Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
    Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
    Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
    Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance

    Cave Story counts, I guess?

I also came across this, which I remember playing because the demo was availabe for mac on the Marathon/Marathon 2 install CDs, called Abuse. It was a LOT of fun, it's available for PC too:

That's all I can think of. Anyone know of any others? Thanks!

not as good as the screenshots looked, but not a bad game. afaik the only English version is on the Sega CD, though, and the game doesn't seem that much fun to me without knowing what's going on.

Downloaded Cave Story this morning, pretty fun so far.

A game I would like to add to the list. It does not fit the description of metroidvania, because it isn't side scrolling, it's more like the older zelda games. Action/Adventure, with some leveling up of your weapons and magic.

    Dink Smallwood.

Funny story, and pretty fun to play through it.

To answer the CaveStory Machinegun thing: Play it twice. It's fun to mess around with, but the Spur is almost necessary for Hell. The game isn't -too- long.

La Mulana players, you'll get to know DeceasedCrab well, if you intend to get anywhere. At all. Have fun impregnating statues.

Both are coming to WiiWare too, so that is a huge plus for both- as they're both extremely good games.

And I'll throw my vote for an odd one: Aquaria. Played it recently. It's different in the sense that it isn't a platformer (you swim), but it still has a HUGE amount of exploration, and ability progression. There is a demo for it, which is actually extremely substantial, running at a few hours or so.

for whatever reason, Eternal Daughter doesn't upscale on my monitor, just is a tiny screen with a huge black border. I tried adjusting my resolution which worked sorta, made it a little bigger but there's still a huge border

also for whatever reason it doesn't seem to like my gamepad

yeah it was doing that on my computer too, I don't remember how I fixed it the first time I played it. I am having the urge to replay so if I can figure it out I'll let you know. it's really fucking good though.

the directions to get it to play in windowed mode don't make any sense to me either... it says to create a shortcut, then add "-nof" to the target, but every possible way I try editing that into the target, Windows just keeps freaking out and claiming it's no longer a valid target for the shortcut file. guess it's time for some google sleuthing.

I think I got the -NOF thing to work by putting it after the quotes, but I'm not sure.

The Aquaria demo has such amazing graphics/music that I'm half-tempted to spend 30 bucks and buy it.

If it'll sell you, the demo's map is about... 1/20th of the full map. Maybe being a bit generous, but it's huuuuge.

Edit: Oh, and you hard-loving people? This game does get a little hard.

wow, that's a pretty big game. How long did it take you to beat it, like 20-30 hours? Is there much/any reason to replay?

honestly the soundtrack alone is almost worth it

oh and yuri in the shortcut, under Target mine says
    "etc etc etc\Eternal Daughter.exe" -NOF
    if that helps

of course it just windows it, and doesnt make it any bigger
