    Winning Eleven(PES) 2010 & FIFA 2010

These games have improved a lot this year. Looks like I'll go with PC WE 2010 and ps3 FIFA 2010.

A screenshot from PES, works very well on low-mid machines as well.

What do people think of these two this year? I enjoyed the gameplay of WE 2010 more than FIFA, but the game modes of FIFA are too good to pass up. Both games did a great job with ball physics(FIFA has improved a lot here), but WE still does it better.

Always loved Winning Eleven. Will probably still get it this year for the PS3.

I must admit FIFA isn't as bad as last year however the gameplay is still hindered by unnecessarily convoluted controls (seriously, achieving gameplay depth through overly complicated controls is bad game design, no matter how you slice it, the controls should be as intuitive as it gets but versatile enough to warrant variety and meritocratically reward playing skill, take a look at Sensible World of Soccer to get a sterling example of what I'm referring to) and humongous, scripted animations which tend to increase the overall responsiveness of the players (the game has improved a lot under this aspect since last year though).

Seems like the ball physics (it felt ultra-light last year) and the routines which handle the collisions between the players and the ball have been tweaked and now the game feels a little more real but the gaming experience gets ruined for me by the awful camera works (it's either too far to understand what's going on on the farthest side or too close to make teamwork worthwhile - the radar unfortunately sucks as well - and there's no way to fix it) and by the astonishingly uncannyvalleyic visuals: the players look like plastic G.I. Joe figures, the proportions are way off (even the pitches are too small...wtf), the animations are fine til a cutscene loads up (then everything gets pretty awkward for a few seconds) and the facial characterization is mediocre at best (the players look nothing like their real life counterparts, shit's still way too cartoony and caricatural for my taste, imho good texture artists > half assed polygonal models).

Also, scoring from right outside the box has gotten way too easy and the game as a whole is severely lacking atmosphere, if you're doubtful play NBA 2k9 or Pro Yakyuu Spirit 5 and then get back to me.

PES is once again shit, like 4.5/10 shit, it basically plays like an arcade (way too fast paced, pinball-like passing, terrible AI, there's no inertia attached to players' movements and so forth), has apparently retained at least half of the negative aspects of the previous "next-gen" iterations (such as players moving on rails on through balls, the ball bouncing on invisible force fields whenever it gets close to the player, etc.) and the mediocre animations (the player's movements are clunky as hell and the animations do not transition seamlessly into one another, it's like watching a bad stop-motion cartoon) detract from otherwise pretty impressive polygonal models (overdone baggy pants aside) complimented by lifelike lighting.

I'm digging the new card system which could've added a lot strategy-wise if only the AI wasn't so bad.

All in all I'm baffled that Seabass Takatsuka's team hasn't been able to get this right for the 3rd year in a row now even though the Playstation 2 counterpart of the game (aka J.League Winning Eleven 2009 Club Championship, check it out) is the best footie game I've ever played aside from SWOS (both gameplay and animations-wise) and is vastly superior to the stuff we've seen on the next-gen systems in the last couple years.

tl;dr, don't get fooled by marketing campaigns and get this instead:

Currently have PES 2009 for 360 and FIFA09 for PS3. I am not sure which to get them for this time around. Tried the demos for both of them on 360, feels about the same as i expected. Tried the FIFA demo on PS3 and it just feels better... maybe it is just because that is what i am used to playing it on.

Mainly, I only play Be a Legend mode on PES, it just feels better than Be A Pro did in FIFA. Although online BAP in FIFA is pretty fun if you get a decent group. How is Online play in PES? I honestly have never played it online for some reason.

FIFA this year feels more powerful, it seemed near impossible to miss with Lampard in the Arena... and not sure what it was but Juve felt very strong in the demo. Feels like the AI players on the team are alot more mindful of getting into space and creating 1-2 opportunities.

PES feels the same, and it is always hard to play them both back to back as they just feel so different. I hope that Legend mode is even more robust than it was in PES09. I would buy it just for that.

As an aesthetic type of person... renaming all of my teams and redoing the kits is fun in PES, but it does get a bit old in the end. I know that getting it on PC would solve some of that (as there are always kit patches that people make) but i just can't see playing it on something other than a console. PC is what i have Football Manager for =P

Anyway, need to spend some more time with the demos, but both feel like improvements over last years titles.

I am a Master League(PES)/Career(SWOS)/Manager Mode(FIFA) whore, so what I like about this years PES is the updates in the Master League department. Addition of real currency and other details are definitely an improvement.

Also, every single player stat do matter in PES, unlike FIFA where you can basically hit the sprint button, dribble thru the entire half and score a one on one goal with a decent striker(including 35 year olds!). Unrealistic and not-so-fun. Browsing hundreds of players for my Master League team is the best part of PES From 35 year old veteran stars to young fast african players...all play like the way they'd in real life.

Like always, it seems like the lack of a deep roster compared to swos and fifa will be the biggest "con" of Master League. I believe they've re-acquired La Liga license though.

And there is FM of course, new UI looks promising and they've FINALLY added a dark skin(I know you can customize them, but most of fan-made ones suck and are "too" colorful). Other than those they've also improved tactics and 3d match engine(which sucked in 2009, but I am a 2d person anyway). Like all FM's its a "definite purchase" as CM and other management games "aren't anywhere near its standard"

Certain japanese Winning Eleven's have always been my favorite as Final Evo, etc. were much better than EU/US ones. And of course, there was Jon Kabira. Guy made any JP WE automatically superior to any other release.

If you get the European version, you can download the save files containing all the kits for the PS3 too.

Why, can't you do that in NA version?

I also spend a good bit of time with renaming, etc. but the kits simply don't look as good as proper licensed ones.

    Sponsors do contribute, I guess.

    Oh, and...

I like how EA fixed the kickoff goal glitch for 2010 but now there's an even worse one where you can take a full power shot from anywhere inside the half line and it will take a laser line right into the goal. EA acknowledges that the glitch is there, but said that it probably won't get fixed in time for the final release.

It's crap like that that keeps me from buying any soccer games, there's always some sort of easy goal glitch.

Not many people bother doing it and releasing it for free ;o They all do it for the Euro version.

    Oh, region restrictions...
They need to write a option file region converter, files should be very very similar after all.

EDIT: If I ever buy the ps3 version of PES(planning for PC) I may end up importing the EU version.

FIFA on xbox and ps3 are the same. The only problem w/ ps3 version(in 2009) is that it tries to "upscale" the graphics to 1080i, which causes a nasty blur.

From display settings if you select 720, they both look the same.

I've been waiting on this release for quite a while now.

Fucking love PES. Been playing it it for years and years now with a buddy of mine.

I'd love to go to a tournament sometime for it, but they rarely have them around here.

Traded my FIFA10 in. Too many bugs and the online servers never work. Might re-buy it after christmas when the MW2 effect has wore off and the game has been patched.

So due to the fact that I am sending off my Xbox for repair (yay 2nd repair on the same console) I am getting this in a couple days for PS3. I am reading massive amounts of Manager Mode issues... like A LOT of bugs.

Is the game that bad in other areas? How is Be a Pro this time around, and how bad is Manager Mode for those of you here that have had hands on time. It is actually going to be a Gamefly rental (cancelled my pre-order as i started reading the bug lists) so i will find out soon enough. Just curious to hear what others here thought after finally playing it.

Right now i have Demon's Souls, and this to tide me over until the repair on my 360 comes back in time (hopefully) for MW2. I am just really wanting to know how this is, since i played the hell out of 09, and had a blast with Ultimate Team mode when it was released. Speaking of, is that in this game out of the box or no?

Manager Mode is a little buggy...first thing that comes to my mind is the weather bug. It sometimes gets stuck to a weather type. Quite sad really, snow effects and night matches are very good this year. Snow is actually as good as Winning Eleven 8. Also the game keeps messing up my original lineup and its annoying (even with assistant manager turned off).

Another thing that's not quite right with manager mode is the new "player form" thing. Del Piero on form can have an acceleration and Sprint Speed of 90+~, which is simply unrealistic. He is 34 years old and even 10 years ago he wasn't this pacey.

Overall, one huge problem with the gameplay is that it is waaaay too dependent on pace, shooting and body balance. Players who perform wonderfully in real life, like Xavi, Fabregas and Iniesta are simply decent players in this game because overall playmaking attributes in this game aren't important. They've got a great passing rating but so does every single above average midfielder in the game. This reminds me of the "Shaq" issue of basketball games. This is one thing PES does much better than FIFA.

Most of gameplay related bugs have been fixed with the patch they released a couple of days ago, but yeah it still have some issues.

Overall, I don't regret buying it. Even with the issues I've mentioned above the Manager Mode is still impressive. New wage budget, transfer system etc. are also quite nice.
