i dig SGU also, i like that its not just another stargate. even tho atlantis was awesome and SG1 was equally if not even more awesome i appreciate them trying something completely knew in the universe.

i dug the ep, people are dropping like flies, i really wish there was a number given. does anyone have any idea how many people were on the ship to begin with?? i could have sworn several dozen if not more went thru the gate from pegasus on the first episode.

i didn't expect TJ to be pregnant at all, i knew there would be drama but that came right out of left field for me, people saying they aren't surprised?? everything else in the ep was kind of neat, that thing they found the young wanted rush to check out right away im sure will come up soon, the light from the obelisk summoning something.

they've done pretty good at tying up some loose ends from the first couple of eps. i'm still waiting to see if they will ever bring us back to those people that took the gate to the other planet back when they were looking for water in i think the 3rd ep??

There seems to be no exploration (the few episodes that have taken place off-world have been pretty stale, except for the 108, Time), which was a big element in both SG-1 and SGA. Most of the screentime is taken by pointless drama (pointless as in there seems to be no character development or longer story arcs involving characters backgrounds, aside from the very obvious one with the nurse and Col. Young) and the show seems to be trying to emulate Battlestar Galactica to some degree, with poor results.
I miss going to new planets and meeting new civilization, acquiring new technology and seeing Daedalus-class ships destroy bigger motherships with Asgard lasers. Oh, and having a cast of characters that are at least somewhat relatable.

Sorry for the rant, I just miss Atlantis very much.

And I do hope that Universe gets better, as it's the only Stargate series we got now, thanks to Atlantis being canceled so that Universe wouldn't have competition.

Yes.

And Atlantis / SG-1 pale in comparison to SGU. Completely different types of shows that can't even really be compared aside from the base of the sci-fi genre. It's like saying FFT and FFXII are the same game because they both take place in a place called Ivalice.

But yeah, SGU is amazing.

Edit: To expand on my comment a bit: SG-1 and Atlantis have a Star Trek-y feel to them with the weird alien races that all speak perfect english and interact well with human technology. Not to mention the enumerable habitable planets that are just so perfect. Space wars? Always. Never short on space wars. It's good for what it is, cheesy sci-fi, and I love it for that.

SGU shares some of the similarities but as I said before, they've taken it in a much different direction. Granted they have pulled just as many "convenient" plot devices out of their ass as any Star Trek or SG series, I feel they've done it with a little more basis in science "theory" over pure science fiction. Which really makes the difference for me.

I don't give a shit if Data or Teal'c can magically use some robot/alien (completely interchangeable here) plot device to save everyone from complete and utter doom 6 times a season. Episodes like tonight make me feel like I'm watching something that at least exists in the realm of plausibility, as silly as that may sound.

On that note, tonight's episode was very awesome, it's hard to find a single moment with Rush that I *don't* like. I enjoyed SG-1/SGA, but SGU tops them both, not the same type of show, but if I had to pick which one is "best" amongst them, SGU wins by a mile.

I'm not one to argue against anyone's opinion, but it does seem that people who enjoy sci-fi that actually feels like sci-fi love SG-1 and SGA, and people who just want a drama show that has sci-fi elements enjoy SGU.
Nothing wrong with that, and I am glad that people enjoy SGU, I'm just bitter that "we", the Stargate fans, had to give up both SG-1 and SGA so that you could have this show.

i'm a huge scifi fan, HUGE. I loved Atlantis, watched it before SG1, watched SG1 and then loved it more then ATL. watching SGU is AMAZING... really can't wait to see where they go with it. Has a ton of potential.

Also really love Caprica which can be argued as a point towards drama loving SciFi but only watching it because of BSG which is less drama-y

Yeah, I watched Caprica's pilot and second episode but I wasn't too impressed with it. :\
I guess my main problem with both Caprica and SGU is that they are both filled with characters that I simply can't relate to. For example, only character that I can even remotely relate to in SGU is Eli and even when he gets screentime he's pretty much in the background. As such, it's hard to care about the characters or what happens to them, when you know so little about them.

SGU is only in the same "Universe" as SG1 and SGA. SGU is in fact another in the long line of "Lost in Space" archetype of scifi shows. Where ST:Voyager was the most recent to hit use this type of scheme there have been others. To further the analogy with ST vs SG comparison. Atlantis was the DS9 to SG1s ST:TNG. Each was meant to bring along a very different feel to the Universe they cohabited in. While I loved TNG and SG1, I much prefered DS9 and Atlantis because they were a bit "dirtier" and got into the fray a bit more on a personal level instead of using "allies" and big space ships.

SGU has a ton of potential. What they need to do to keep it going forward is stop with the "communication stone" episodes. We don't want to see what shit is happening on Earth. We want to see whats happening on Destiny and the planets she drops them off to visit.

This week's episode was a masterpiece in regards to character progression of Rush as well as using "guest stars" without going back to the well too many times with those idiotic comm stones. If we see a continued shift towards "lost style" flashbacks to progress characters and facilitate guest stars then I will be happy.

I agree. What I've felt has been missing from this show and would elevate the show from "okay" to "great" is character development, and this episode proved me right.

I have a feeling we'll spend the next episode filling in some more backstory as those on Destiny try to rescue those left behind. I think Greer's flashback was a segue to us hearing about his childhood.

This is something I can get behind.^^ While at the time, I didn't have a problem with the comm stone eps, looking back now they were far inferior to the other episodes. Although it was kind of nice to get some backstory on characters, that detail hasn't played into anything currently, so it was kind of for nothing.

I know for myself, I absolutely love the show. I never really watched SG1, just caught an episode here and there, but I did see about a season or 2 of SGA. I liked them both, I just suck at remembering to watch tv shows. When I did start watching SGA I was pissed I only really got the last season out of it so a lot of things I'm sure I didn't get connections to. I think part of what I also like about SGU is since it is pretty low on alien beings/stuff that there isn't a lot to the sets/characters so you don't get some of the "cheap" looking that comes where almost everything onscreen besides humans is CG or noticably fake (simply due to budget of course). I do hope they are able to make another more explorative/combative series in the future. I've never really followed the SG universe so there is a lot here I don't know about (like the Ancients), to me the best I can come up with for a good portion is "a wizard did it", but I still find it interesting and entertaining.

Also, I hate catching up on shows cuz then I gotta wait for the next fucking episode. >< Watching a season at once is so much more enjoyable.

Finally, I'm getting some back story for Rush. It also appears that he may have a change of heart and stop being such a dick now. We'll see how it goes

I really enjoyed last weeks episode, I'm looking forward to tonights. It seems as if they are going to branch the people left behind into their own story plot for a bit.

shit was hilarious for the 30 secs, the other 50 mins of that episode was terrible
