    You are if you identify with the culture of that period more than the mid90s+

    It's not a "set" deadline, it's just a reference to cultural cues.

    If you understand a joke about an 80s sitcom that you watched *during the 80s*, then you can consider yourself part of gen X.

    I think the identifiable trait of GenX'ers was coming of age and into the marketplace during a time of recession and upheaval in the mid- to late-80s and even into the early 90s. Most GenX members are in their thirties and forties now, though the similarities between GenX and GenY in dealing with economic hardships are growing much more similar.

    I thought we would be on Z by now. since the generation before me was x(was slightly too young), therefore my one should in theory be y , and therefore the new generation starting up under me should be z. Or does the generation not get counted until they're about 25~30?

    I've seen 1975-1981 be called the X-Y cusp as there was no real moment when Gen X stopped and Gen Y started.

    I was born in 1981 and while I'm old enough to remember a time without internet and actually take responsibility for my actions, I don't have some of the experiences that the 30-something year olds that I know have.

    Actually 1955-1968 (or those too young to be drafted for Vietnam but who grew up during that period) is referred to by an obscure name, Generation Jones. Not sure where that name came from, but I think of them more as the "Dazed & Confused" generation.

    And yeah, the switch from GenX to GenY is tough to nail down.. I'd say it's anywhere between 1985 and 1990. GenY has been done for a long time though - it ended with the turn of the century.
