    Car Speakers

So a while ago I got speakers for my car because the ones with it were blown. I have a 1990 Honda Accord LX Sedan. I looked online and I'm pretty sure it said 6.5" in front and 6x9" in back. Anyway, I got it mixed up and got 6.5"s to put in the back.

I finally got around to getting 6x9"s yesterday, and I'm not sure if they fit in the back now. The only place I could find that says speaker size is Crutchfield, and it says 6.5" for both. Now I don't really care because I got the speakers from Target so I can just return them, but does anyone know where I can find or knows the right size, or should I call a dealer?

Find the speakers in the back and measure them or take a picture and post it here

I'll look but I think my dad threw them away.

My dad did throw it away. That's the spot where the old speaker was and the 6.5" I have. It seems like that will fit almost all the way through, so I'm not sure how I should mount that. There also used to be covers over top, but they were in the box that was thrown out. If it comes down to it, there's a junkyard nearby that has an accord similar to mine I can try to get parts from.

    GO GO ISIGNIA! lol

There is a big difference between 6.5 and 6x9. You should be able to tell the difference by looking at the speaker.

From the looks of the mounting hole, it seems it could maybe fit both. The one oblong side makes me think this. Have you tried to mount the 6.5s? As long as there is enough room for it to sit, it should be ok. If you have to, you could try to mount them from underneath.

I've tried putting both in. The 6x9s didn't seem like they'd fit without some fidgeting. I'll try putting the 6.5s from underneath tomorrow. The bar that springs my trunk is kinda in the way from the bottom. I'm just not sure what they'd hold on to or something because the screws don't line up with the other holes around the outside, but I guess that's because the old cover was there.

Ah. That explains the mounting difficulties. After market speakers never fit as well as factory

That's what I thought The magnetic part was sticking to the sides when I had them back there for the last few months. I might see if I can get them on a little better then, or if getting the factory cover will hold them in place.

    That's a 6.5" mount. 6"x9" mounts are oval.

If I get a picture, will you guys be able to tell what size the door ones are without me taking them off? I'm not sure how to do that yet.

When I read the thread title, I thought something along the lines of horse whisperers, but for cars.

    I am disappointed.

Do you know how to operate a measuring tape? Or a ruler?

A rude way to put it, but this. We can't really eyeball measurements via pictures. If you have both speakers you'll know that the 6x9's are oval shaped and the 6.5" are circles. The mounting hole doesn't look like it would fit 6x9's without some modification. The reason the screw holes aren't lining up is because each company has their own screw pattern. Most likely some sort of mounting ring was included in the box with your speakers. Probably plastic and has many spots for screws. Try messing around with that and see if you can line up the screw patterns so you can mount it correctly.

Yeah, I was being a bit of a smartass, but figuring out what size the speaker is is simple. You literally just measure the diameter of the cone (it's the cone shaped thing that looks like thick black paper usually) and that's the size of the speaker. They come in tons of sizes, 4", 6", 5"x8", 6"x9" etc, so just eyeballing it from a picture will not be as accurate as simply grabbing a ruler and measuring it.

Also, in most cases you can just use some self tapping sheet metal screws to mount the speaker in regardless of the hole pattern.

I know how to measure, I just didn't want to try and rip my door apart when I didn't have to. I can measure the door ones, but I don't have the back ones to measure. I know 6x9 is oval, but I was mistaken when I thought they went in the back, which is why I was asking.

What the dick? Don't listen to this guy, please.

Do you still have the original speakers from your car? The rear ones?

    Edit:

I'll look but I think my dad threw them away.
If he did, he owes you new ones. If you did and you're just deflecting, that was stupid. Go to a junkyard or to ebay and get some more, otherwise your speakers will hit the trunk tension bars, look like shit, and not fit correctly.

Your rears are 6.5" You've already removed the enclosures, so you know they mount from the bottom with three 10/8mm nuts. Take the original enclosure, flip it over, and look at the bottom. There will be 4 phillips head screws.

    Remove these.

The grill will now come off the enclosure. Remove that, and look at the speaker inside. There will be 3 or 4 philips head screws holding this in. Remove these, and remove the speaker.

Drop your new speaker into the enclosure, and rotate it until the holes line up. Install is the opposite of removing them, which I listed above. Do yourself a favor and buy the speaker wire harnesses so you'll make sure they're in phase (positive wire to positive terminal and negative to negative)

Your front speakers are either 6.5" or 5.25" Honda liked to mix that up for some goddamn reason, and there's no way to tell without tearing the door apart. If it is a 6.5, it will probably be sitting in a plastic bucket. Often, these buckets are too shallow to fit an aftermarket speaker with a larger magnet into. No big deal, hack the back of the bucket off (its held into the door with 4 phillips head screws)

The rear speakers should be a 6 1/2 from what I remember from 5 years ago installing in cars. They should attach to metal plate or a plastic weird ass looking thing. Then the whole assembly gets bolted down the the metal of the car. Should be able to peal the black foam crap off the edge of the old speaker to see small gold screws around its edge and the new ones w/o the plastic grill that comes with them should be able to fit most 61/2 aftermarket speakers. But like I said it has been over 5 years since I installed in mass, car audio equipment, that may be out of practice. I do assume tho by saying your rear speakers had blown and these are replacing them. Just peak your head under the hole in the trunk. If there is no wire harness the car never had rear speakers and you will have to run new wires to the rear to provide current to them.

It's not that difficult. Having half a brain can save you tons of money on all the silly little adapters and shit that most places make you buy to install aftermarket crap. Audio is hardly rocket science.

Edit: Keep in mind the OP is installing Insignia's in a '90 Accord. I doubt he wants to spend more on the shit to install/wire it than he did on the speakers themselves.

Good point. Thats why he should use the brackets that came with the car, like I said. Thats how you put speakers in this car - not just shooting screws into the sheetmetal because the holes won't line up. Also, if you do just sink them into the back without the enclosures, the aftermarket grilles won't cover the hole entirely and will look like crap. I already mentioned how the speakers will hit the trunk tension bars.

Don't try to justify a halfassed approach because its cheap - the correct way costs nothing more.

OP, if you're really penny-pinching, the thicker of the two wires in the harness attached to your speakers is the positive one. Good luck.

I remember when I got these speakers, it didn't seem like they fit in the old covers, so I threw them and the factory radio into a box and put it in the basement. I can't find them, so I'd have to find a replacement in a junkyard. As for the wiring, it wasn't special, just hanging there.

I'm guessing wiring harness is the metal tip on the end. Those came with the new wires that we spliced together. I've also had these hanging in the holes for 1.5-2 years, and they don't hit the tension bars, but they also don't seem like they sit right either.

Also, those speakers I took a pic off were like like $20 super discounted from Best Buy, and I'm planning on getting Wal Mart ones for the doors whenever I get them open.

Edit: As for cost, I want to keep it low. I figured I could just get the same size and replace them easily, which isn't working too well for me. My head unit was like $120~; I don't know if that's high or good, but it came with free install and discount from Circuit City.
