    Glitch warning.

I have already sent a message to SE regarding this, and I have also checked with the admins here to make sure posting this is ok.

This is going to be pretty vague, but the information has already been reported at another FFXI source, so I am only providing this as a warning.

There is currently a glitch that involves one of the event systems in the game that would allow people to create infinite XP chains at any level because the glitch seemingly removes the time restrictions on XP chains.

I have not done anything to test this, I am just reporting what I have heard. That said, this would easily be seen as an exploitable glitch and will likely get people banned if used.

I don't think it will be too much trouble because I think that anyone that would think to use this exploit would just Astral Burn the XP instead of doing this. I just wanted to get this warning out now before anyone stumbles on it (and you really could just stumble on it accidentally) and gets banned without knowing why.

If its the glitch I'm thinking of, then its been around a lot longer than the "event system" you're referring to, just that the tool needed to do it is now closer to common XP camps.

No, nothing like the salvage dupes. More along the lines of if you don't know about it you've never done this and gone "chain 7 wtf".

I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here (and most likely get nailed for it but hell, why not eh?), and say it's due to the fact that interacting with certain objects causes you to enter a paused state. Am I at all close?

Thats what I'm thinking of yeah. Not just certain objects, pretty much any object will do it.

Well, actually not every one does it. Specifically, I'm referring to Caskets at the moment, because I know they do the suspend thing, much like talking to certain NPCs. You can test it by casting a short-lived buff then interacting with an object but not completing the action. The buff won't wear off, and that could also impact the EXP chain timer as well.

It does. FoV books and Signet/Vendor NPC do it too. Chocobo guy as well iirc. Never tested it myself, but if it is the glitch the OP is talking about, its incredibly old.

I'll have to agree, a lot of timers freeze when you interact with something.

Wasn't aware the merchant NPC worked as well but I used to use Signet NPCs to hold my buffs when people were busily muling and what not so I didn't have to keep rebuffing right before getting into EXPing.

I did once get a higher chain than my wife due to opening Caskets, but I'd never bother doing it intentionally to boost chains. It would be insanely annoying unless the puller was the sync target anyway. And even then, really, exp is fast enough these days in the zones this could be exploited in. No reason to bother with stretching chains.

I don't see how anyone could be banned for this, it's not like you're doing anything out of the ordinary - you still have to actually kill the mobs so it's not like you're generating exp in some bizarre and illegal fashion. You're just artificially keeping up the chain.

Isn't artificially keeping up a chain out of the ordinary?

People have done worse with this sort of mechanism, and it's not like a bit more XP is really game breaking.

Pretty sure those MNKs that used this mechanism to unleash Jesus-raping Chi Blasts on Kirin years ago didn't get banned... they just adjusted Boost. I'd say doing that is definitely a more serious case of mechanics abuse than keeping up an exp chain.

I think you are slightly mistaken or you're just being sarcastic... Look at the last line, which I conveniently bolded.

That's... sort of the definition of exploiting a bug. It's not like this was an intended feature to "pause" the exp chain. It's an unintended consequence of how interacting with certain NPCs and objects.

I wouldn't exactly call doubling the drop rate of items with an incredibly shitty drop rate game breaking either.

Fortunately, its not up to me or you or random idiot 6 posts up to decide what is and isn't gamebreaking.

Obviously it's not "normal" to be able to prolong a chain in such a manner, what I meant was that everyone already does this to preserve their buffs etc. It's nothing new, so using it in this fashion is hardly jaw-droppingly scandalous.

Comparing this to Salvage duping at all is just moronic.
