For some reason, minorities feel that we have to embrace our stereotypes regardless of whether it's going to bring us anywhere. And what makes it worse is that actually going somewhere in life is a direct contradiction of our stereotypes, which means by default, we just don't want to go anywhere in life since we feel such a strong need for these stereotypes.

Social race / group identification is a wonderful and ugly thing; assigning ourselves identifiers is ingrained, even if it's so simple as 'us' and 'them', but the issue of assigned identifiers is something else. It's having control taken from you (or really, allowing that control to be in the hands of others). Taking over assigned identifiers is empowering.. but until you've created your own definitions, how have you really gotten away from what someone else told you you are?
