This transcends race. The "Oh yeah, well we're all stupid, so you're not included" mentality is fucking frightening. Comfort in groups, absolutely. Comfort in groups that pat themselves on the back for under-performing and disregarding education is I don't even have a word for it. I have literally gaped at people in my classes.

The American feeling of "don't think you're better than anyone else, we're all equal" has become "if you're smart, you're undermining the group, and thus need to be ostracized".

I told my little brother once "It's okay to want to fit in with others. You're human. But why not try to fit in with somebody who has a job?"

I wish he would look at more successful people as people to want to fit in with. I mean, he wants a house and a car and a lot of money, but the people he try to fit in with are broke, have no car, and have no money.

Well, unfortunately, they technically are trying to fit in with successful people. They're at the studio everyday because they just know they're going to blow up big and be rich like the people on TV.

The thing is about music and sports is that talent alone isn't even enough to make it. The vast majority of incredibly awesome ball players will not ever step foot in the NBA (most black athletes at my school have really stupid majors because they think they'll go to the NBA. It's a shame because with their full scholarships, they could easily get an engineering degree or something and be guaranteed a well playing job for life). Most of the absolutely best rappers in the country wont ever sell an album except the ones they sell out the back of their cars. And if you really love music or sports that much, go for it. Just get a degree as well. It wont hurt. If you get rich, paying off student loans will be easy, and if you don't, you're still making 50k~100k per year.

Unfortunately, these are the only models of success many of us ever see growing up. I think this contributes to our mentality.

Technically, pretty much everything we're saying in this thread applies to all races. It's more about our background and environment than race. It just so happens that most people we have experience with in these type of backgrounds are also minorities. But we all know there are lots of white people in the same boat.
