    2. One Billion People Watched the Opening Ceremony | TV, TV Ratings, 2008 Olympics | BuzzSugar - Movies, TV & Music Apparently a billion people watched the ceremony. I dunno about the events, but the ceremony drew lots of attention.

Because the leaders of all the other countries were making a personal appearance, and it was perceived that if the US President didn't (particularly when it's his home town) make said appearance, it would mean it's not important to the country as a whole. Which, frankly, it's probably not, but /shrug.

Precisely because of the misconceptions that it does provide an economic boost. See also: home town glory

Too lazy to look but within the year prior to the Beijing games the Economist or Foreign Policy ran a really good article arguing that the Olympics were a collossal, corrupt waste of time/money.

Pretty much everyone of their respective sports would be watching. Olympics isn't exactly just a show athletes put on for the general public you know

Considering we host summer or winter games every ~10 years I'd say its pretty fucking important to us. Also most of the companies that advertise want to reach the US market as their primary customers.

Everyone is so damn aggressive here.

I don't know what sort of crack you're on but this city really sucks and I live near Wrigley which the only good thing about having a game there is that it attracts a lot of very appealing women. The only decent place to live is the north side because everything else sucks

Oh and if the do decide to make that pain in the ass Olympic bs here I believe they'll be raising tax more on us. This city is now for rich people to live in thanks to Mr. Mayor who likes to go behind our backs and sign contracts with outside parties to change the Parking Meters for what was it 50 years or something? Everything costs an arm and a nut here.
Ouch, live near Boystown? There's the problem. Chicago is a great tourist spot for most people. Living there and working there is a totally different situation. You see, you are focusing on the "living/working" portion while others are focusing on the "tourism".

What's that? Free admission to Shedd Aquarium? CTA passes for students that commute to UIC/Columbia/IIT/etc. Sweet. 300 dollars for dinner in the Hancock? THE GOD DAMN DARK KNIGHT TOUR AROUND CHICAGO?

Every metropolis sucks to live in. I hate aspects of Chicago as well (more specifically the parking). I usually use the shitty El to get around the city and then walk my way to destinations. Since I'm a guy I won't get raped, so I have no problems walking. It's getting INTO Chicago that sucks balls right now (by car).

It's not hard to navigate the city, either...I don't know where people are getting this idea of a labyrinth of a grid system: Numbers run East/West, presidents/states run North and South, with the diagonal avenue every so often. It's not that hard. Get a fucking GPS if you are that bad at driving or take the train into the city and pay up the ass for a cab. Walking doesn't hurt either.

I believe our current public opinion rating is 61% of people in the city in favor of holding the Olympics.

    Find out more at :

    Chicagoans for Rio 2016

It would be cool as hell to see some events, despite the $1000 ticket price estimate...

Edit: IT'S BUILT ON A FUCKING GRID

Edit #2: 294 opened up to 4 lanes yesterday. Let the drunk driving fatalities commence! Lance Briggs, I'm looking at your flaming Lambo wreckage...

I don't know why people here are hating on the CTA lol It sucks if you live in a poor neighborhood but from some of the places people have mentioned that's not an issue, and it's not that bad lol The main problem (aside from coverage of certain areas I already mentioned) is bus clumping, where instead of one bus every 15min you'll go 45min without one and then get 3 in a row, but even that is way way way better now than it was 9 years ago when I first moved here, plus the bustracker website helps a ton for planning that now.

The rail lines, though, are really good, provided you don't expect them to actually come at the exact time listed on the schedule. Just show up assuming you'll have to wait 1~5min at rush hour, up to 20min if you're going out somewhere in the evening, or 30~40min if it's like 3am, and just be pleasantly surprised if it comes earlier. I personally prefer that to a Metra-style schedule, where everything runs exactly at the same time every day and if you miss your train you're screwed (people at work who are like "I have to leave within 3 minutes or I'll miss my train and have to wait an hour and a half to go home." lol)

You obviously haven't been around Addison and Clark, go there a Friday night, or any other night and you'll see it's not a problem.

What is so great about Chicago? Rio is a beautiful tropical place with beeches and hot Brazilian people. What does Chicago have? It doesn't even have hills. Fuck Chicago.

Neither of them are anything I would consider attractive for the Summer games.

Vancouver has the water, Seattle has the water, Rio has the water, Beijing had some funky buildings, the water, and a weather machine, Greece had the water, hot Greeks, and nice weather, Australia had the water, and nice weather.

Chicago has um, some flat land and a big lake, and shitty weather?

    Edit:

Anyone else notice the Chicago logo for the 2016 games looks incredibly similar to the Obama campaign logo? I think they hired the same graphic designer. Also, I bet Chicago will get chosen just because of Obama, his wife, and Oprah.

They are currently edging Rio out, and the brazilian tail that would be offered to the IOC committee deciding this wouldnt match up to Obama since he's motherfucking Obama.

The first was just a jab at Cub's fans.

And secondly, since you are being so apathetic and I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic:

    Shedd Aquarium
    Adler Planetarium
    Field Museum
    Museum of Contemporary Art
    The Art Institute
    Cubs Day Games
    Lincoln Park Zoo
Museum of Science and Industry (one of my all time favorite places)
    Navy Pier
Millennium Park (Grant Park too, especially during "The Taste" although expensive)
Oddly enough, even though it's not in Chicago - Woodfield Mall.

And if you have kids along, you can bring them to the Children's Museum, which is also amazing if you are a child.
