Books on the human alpha male

I'm looking for a few good books on the human alpha male, culturally and biologically. It's for a research paper, and I'm not having too much luck with the library/amazon etc searches.

I'm sure that there are good quality books on this subject (there HAVE to be), but I can't seem to come across them.

What I'm looking for specifically are books that include:
-modern alpha characteristics (80's & 90's into today), who are viewed as leaders, more prone to be at the top of cultural hierarchies, etc. (Cross-culture comparisons would be awesome)
-tribal human alpha male (chiefdoms, big men, etc) characteristics


books that compare the two specifically would be GREAT, but i'm willing to make my own judgement calls between multiple books.


If you're interested, my thesis is (sum.) that the essential qualities that define a human alpha male are the same throughout the history of time, and differences between perception of value are based on cultural standards rather than biological differences

Half-joking, half-serious though. In the modern, post-industrial era is the "alpha male" really the hypermasculine figure that the is satirically embodied by GTA IV's Brucie Kibbutz? If so, what role does a self-centred, consumerist-oriented character have when they give little to nothing back to society and are only concerned with taking all that they can.

Also, if this is for your Undergrad or, god forbid, Master's thesis why are you asking on BG for research help? Go to jstor.org and start putting in some search parameters. To get you thesis topic approved anyway I'm amazed you did not have to provide a reading list or some form of research bibliography to you thesis supervisor.

i have a cultural anthro book from last year and that has a few good sections on chiefs/bigmen, but aside from that its bunk. it's really difficult finding modern stuff, so i'm probably going to have to go a different route. I have until monday to have the thesis approved, so i'm not in a super rush, but of the ideas that i have this is the one that i'd like to do.

I remember reading some articles about being an alpha male in north american society in GQ or one of those other mens magazines in the 90s. You could also try finding this article:

there are some evolutionary psychology books that might fit your bill, but take them with a HUGE grain of salt because they're full of bs passed as "facts".
