Viewing PC's video files on XBOX 360 Video player

Hey I'm trying to watch my TV shows from my PC on my TV downstairs, and I have everything networked, but I can't seem to find places to get movies in the right format when downloading them off torrents. I always get .mkv files when downloading them from torrents (via Vuze) which are not compatible. Even if I change the file extension it'll show up on the list, but give me an error if I try to play it. I have gotten original .avi files to play on it, but they're rare online.

Anyone know a free converter/place to find Media player friendly videos?

Use Windows 7 and the betas of the Divx 7 and Windows Media Player 12. It has a built in mkv decoder, my roommate plays all his mkv's on our 360.

Not sure if TVersity has a Matroska(mkv) codec on it but it's worth a shot.

Why were you changing the extension? That doesn't change the data inside the file. MKV and AVI are containers, and the way the container works is different for each. You have to run them through a converter to change the file format, not simply change the extension. Changing a TXT extension to an MP3 extension doesn't convert the text to music, it just confuses the computer because the data isn't what the program opening it expects.

heh, no TVersity doesn't support MKV. Been trying to watch some HD Fringe but failed.

I figured it was the 360/PS3 not supporting MKV so I told TVersity to Transcode yet it still doesnt work so nope doesn't work.

I can't get WMP12 to even let me add shit to my library now. I hate it.

Soon as my moneys situated (lil in debt right now... ) i'm going to build this
Newegg.com - Aikar - HTPC and run XBMC
Prolly over a linux distro, but debating windows to possibly play FFXI on it too.
