some of the suits offer significantly more damage resistance than the ones available in the game, I think someone posted about them on gamefaqs a while back.

edit: here it is, the Tank Suit has 60% damage resistance which is just fucking crazy

Yeah thats what I thought, in spite of this being a fantastic game, I didnt care too much to buy the DLC. I do have the free obsidian suit you got for buying it new last october.

ya, IIRC the free preorder suits (as well as the military suit you get for beating the game) only have 30% damage resistance or something. I'd say most of the DLC is useless besides the Tank Pack (320 pts), but my guess is that might make the harder difficulty modes a bit too easy.

edit: nvm, the elite suite (the one that was free on xbl right after the game came out) only has 10% damage reduction wtf

Yeah the PS3 version of that suit is the obsidian suit and its 10% as well.

Don't bother with any other gun just max out the plasma cutter. If you can max it out really fast early in the game nothing can touch you for a long time and by the time stuff is hard again you should have your suit maxed out.
