yeah... i thought i put it in my post but i failed to mention that him opting out would be crazy on his part. opting out of 20m and then signing for the MLE would be even more insane, yeah.

i think the more reasonable thing is the celts re-signing him to something like a 40-45M contract for 3 years. obviously PP is the heart of the celtics but i don't think ainge is gonna wanna offer him a maxed out extension while he's in his declining years.

i mean, say pierce says "gimme a raise and a 5 year extension" which would be like 21+ a year, prolly scaling up. would you do it if you could go younger and cheaper in the 2010 pool and then 2012 one when KG expires? personally i wouldn't and i think ainge would balk too.

while you're right that blowing up a contender to overpay for FA's is bad, danny ainge is a hell of a lot smarter than joe dumars. and fact of the matter is the FA's in this year's pool are a lot better than last year's. he'd have to be supremely retarded to screw up a FA signing in 2010 cause pretty much all the big name players (save amare) are worth the money.

Anyone that trades Tony Delk and Antoine Walker for Jiri Welsch and Raef LaFrentz is a dumbass. Rondo aside, I'd put him and Dumars on the same level at this point. This was back when employee # 8 was still wrecking shit and shimmying after he hit another 3 in yo fazeeeeee. Delk was the man too, those wildcats were boss.
