    Kindle

I got a refurbished Kindle 2 the other day... love it so far.

I was wondering if any of you know of any good resources of what I can do (hacks, free books, etc) other than buy books off of amazon store?

Also, for manga readers, is there a good way to convert scanlations into kindle format so I can read them on the kindle?

    Thanks in advance.

You can find .pdf version of some books but you occasionally run into compatibility errors.

Also, for .pdf files you can't zoom in or anything-- so if the text is too small, too bad.

Additionally, some books are free from the getgo. Sherlock Holmes, The Prince, Pride and Prejudice; these books and others are free because someone transcribed the books and for some reason Amazon allows older classic books to be put on their store for free.

If you want newer books however, or manga, you may have to look elsewhere. Try throwing a .pdf manga on your kindle. See how that works.

I'm getting an E-reader soon as well (the Sony pocket one) and also would like to know where people get their books from. Any good torrent sites out there?

    #ebooks on irchighway

@octopus: On my Kindle 2 I find I get the best results getting .html or .lit (and extracting to html) files (from that irc channel), making any small formatting changes I want, and using Mobipocket's software to make them into PRCs.

#bookz on Undernet for me, it's very rare to not be able to find a fiction book there.

Download and use calibre to convert books into the best format for your particular e-reader, it does a wonderful job. It also has a bunch of other cool features, like downloading new posts/news/etc from various websites in the morning and loading them onto your e-reader automatically, so that you can read them during your commute.

And I hear there's a free internet hack, too. Browse websites on the go, with no subscription and no fees, and add in some tethering to the mix, and you're golden.

You can already browse websites without a hack... although it's not great (you're dealing with an ebook reader afterall). If tethering works it would be quite something though...

Except the fact that if this is/was true (which I still do not believe it is) they would notice. There is a tethering function but its the other way around. Instead of giving internet, you can use it to give the kindle internet.

Even if you could use the kindles internet, you would just end up being shot down as soon as they saw your bandwidth usages.

One of my favorite spots for free (and even legal) books is baencd.thefifthimperium.com

It has multiple CDs which Baen Books sometimes releases with their hardcover books, they generally have all of the previous books by that author and some others. Baen lets these be shared to get more interest in their authors and generate more readership. All of the books come in kindle readable formats.

Another good spot for finding when books get posted for free is booksontheknob.blogspot.com a blog which posts links to free downloadable books from amazon. Also mobileread.com is a big community for all your mobile reading information.
