    Power Surge

So, while I was at work a few days ago, the power went out at my house, and when I got home, my computer would not turn on, but other things in the outlet did.

I took out the old hard drive of my old computer and connected it with a new computer. First, I unplugged the 2 wires that were in the new hard drive and put them into the old hard drive.

I start up the computer, and it gives me a black screen with several option, "Start in Safemode, Start in Network something, Start from last successful somethingsomething". When I chose any of the options, screen goes black as if the computer restarts and I get a 'no signal' message on my monitor and the computer restarts again giving me the same several starting up options.

I'm guessing there's another cable that needs to be plugged in to my old hard drive right?

no, if you're getting that screen your computers accessing the hard drive.

theres only two cables that go in. an IDE/SATA and a power cable, if its not working, it might be a hardware conflict or your harddrives busted.

either that, or the boot sector could have been messed up.. It would typically bsod, but ive seen computers where the same thing happened. Just use windows disc - recovery console.. fixboot.exe and fixmbr.exe to see if it would work.

From my experiences, trying to boot a hard drive like that will have errors. My understanding of it is... that particular windows installation is configured for the computer it was installed on. Trying to boot it into a different computer can mess up for whatever reason.

Try booting from the newer hard drive like normal, while having the old one hooked up as a slave/data hard drive. See if you can access the data still, run hardware scans to see if there's errors, etc, whatever you were planning on doing.

This is working, which is fucking great, but do I have to individually give myself permission to each and every thing one at a time to transfer these files to new hard drive?

Edit: I ran into a problem I think.

I give myself permission to use programs, music, text files and pictures but they still won't let me view them. Access denied and stuff?

There was a tweaking program I came across a while back that allowed you to take full ownership easily, can't remember its name though, maybe try something like this Easier Way to Take Ownership and Grant Access Files or Directories in Vista

Edit: In my Documents and Settings folder: Administrator, All Users, and HP_Administrator show up. I can drag and drop, open, play items from the first two (Administrator and All Users folder) but not the HP_Administrator.

I'm stuck and I ignored that link you gave me because I don't think that is my problem at the moment any more.

These are the steps I take:

My Computer > E: drive > Documents and Settings > HP_Administrator > Desktop > Soulseek folder > any random music folder

I click on any music folder and am greeted with a "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. To gain access, click on the security tab"

To continue, you must be an administrative user with permission to view the object's security properties, Do you want to continue

Box comes up saying if I want to take ownership, I will need to select a name from the list. I click my name and now the file says its current owner is me. I apply changes and exit out.

Clicked the music folder again and I can now see the tracks for the cd. I again gain ownership of a particular song on the cd. I try to play it and it says "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy setting not be correct."

I try to drag and drop it to my new desktop and I get a message saying "You need permission to perform this action"

    What am I doing wrong?

What kind of files are the tracks?

You can set owner globally btw, it'll take a while to write to all the files and stuff though. When you go to select the owner there should be a little checkbox somewhere on the screen that says "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"

Do the ownership change from the highest level folder (ideally the root of the old drive) and it will rewrite it for every folder and file therein.

These are mp3 files and I finally got it to work. Thank you >_<

I just do the same thing for text documents, pictures, and programs right?

Yes, but like I said if you just do the ownership change on the top level (even if the top level already says you're the owner, you can click "you" again and check the box to enforce it down) you won't have to target specific files. You'll probably have to leave your system alone for ~10 minutes while it writes down, but once it's done it's done, and will save you a ton of clicking.

Edit: Programs will probably have to be reinstalled, you can't just copy the program folders over and have them work straight up.
