Jamie Fox seems like he basically used the show for publicity in retrospect. The industry isnt tuned so that being a great singer means you get even half a glance from a radio station or label.
By showing that he did have musical talent from time to time on his show he was (whether he realized it or not) displaying that he did have some musical talent to the world and generating enough interest that he could be allowed to make a CD and since actually made good music unlike alot of others by virtue of "Holy shit he's actually good. let me tell my freinds about this song."
