Backlit keys alone is reason enough to buy a g11. Once you have it you will never use anything else.
Thanks for g13 advice, time to buy

I know this may be newb but what exactly is WASD
keys usually assigned for movement by default in most games...
W = walk forward
A = turn/strafe left
S = walk backwards
D = turn/strafe right
I wish you coulda seen the look on my face when I looked at my keyboard right after I read that..... lol thanks
HJKL IJKL WASD
I would always be looking at them. I can't play a game with keyboard controls without looking at the keyboard now and then, as I can't touch-type. If I'm using the keyboard, I'm looking at it, happens in FFXI too. Otherwise I'll drift from IKJL to UHJK or 9OIP and not notice until things stop working right. That's why I play games with a controller and only use the keyboard for chat, besides there being tons of keys that don't do anything and miscellaneous keys that do things in the middle of them. I like my game controls wehre every button in reach does something and I have no doubt of hitting the one I intend to, which a keyboard doesn't give me. To me a keyboard is a text input device, not a controller, and it feels unnatural to use for games.
i guess you just get used to it then.. i have to look at my keys if im on a different keyboard than im used to. like those ergonomic things, i just cannot use those.
G11 because the new G15 sucks and people rarely fully utilize the LCD display anyways. For what it's worth, I have both.
i think it was asked above, but didn't get an answer. can you use the g15 binder plugin for windower with the G11? the LCD does indeed seem like a gimmick (what am i going to do? route recast data there? riiiiiiiiiiight...) so i'd be happy to trade that for the greater number of keys and (i think) lower price point but not at the expense of getting the full functionality of those keys.
the lcd has about as much purpose as the backlit keys do.
except i do know a few things id do with it as far as vidya games go...
edit: if you were feeling bold, you could route map information to it, would work better with the colour LCD. but I ALWAYS have the issue with looking at the map while running, how i get most of my aggro. write a little program that shows where you are, zoomed into a 320x240 lcd screen - pull the Pos x, y out of FFXI, pull out the map from whatever dat its stored, paint a pretty picture with a red dot.
I got the g11 after I stopped playing, so can't say with certainty. BUT I can tell you Sims3 isn't recognized by the g11 either.
What happens with it, is the g11 is supposed to automatically load the button config for each game that is currently being played. If none is played (or it doesn't think there is one), it is set to a default menu.
Thing is you can set what keys you want for the default.
So that's basically what I did for the sims and it works fine. I would imagine FF would be the same way.
best bet buy it from your local best buy, try it, if it doesn't return it. (and if it does work still return it then order from someplace cheaper lol)
if youve never used the LCDSirReal plugin youve never used your g15 properly
Ooooh - so do the G-series keyboards have clicky clacky keys? I'm a wierdo who prefers those to squishy keyboards to type on (nothing nicer than letting rip at an idiot and having a nice clicking vehemence to your keystrokes) and been dithering about buying one for a few years off and on now.
I like backlit keys though - my current keyboard (Microsoft Razr I believe) has them and it's really handy if you're like me and tend to wander by the PC in the dark at night and get distracted and start typing). It's got a few customizable keys but not many, doesn't really cut the mustard but it was the most comfortable thing I could find to type on at the time my old Natural keyboard died - the new ones are shit Microsoft - I get really bad RSI so have to be quite picky about keyboards I use.
And WSAD can go to hell - I can't deal with moving characters around with my left hand - brain just does not compute with it - which is why my alt account that I have logged on on the laptop generally looks like it's been steered by a drunken blind man when I try to run it around... but I'm a girlie and never grew up playing many FPSes and stuff where you use WSAD I guess.
I'm not kind to keyboardsthis one has the wrist rest blu-tacked on already and it's quite new.
people who like the clacky keyboards are not that uncommon, and good specimens of the old IBM model M keyboard (old buckling spring keyboard with a very satisfying clack) can fetch fairly decent prices on ebay. are there any sources that still sell the model 1 of the G15 or are those just over and done with outside of busted up used models on ebay?
WASD = the reason I love being a lefty. I get to use arrow keys while right handed people get to moan and moan about WASD. Even more so since Logitech finally made me a Left Handed laser mouse now also
The computer keyboard is at least one thing us lefties can hang over the head of right handed people. The only thing that was naturally designed for us and y'all had to adapt to it.
huff, I'm right handed and i forged my way into WASD using a TANDY 1000, prior to the interblag D:
IJKL later when I got a second player for Nibbles.
QBasic was awesome.
Pretty sure I'm happier with WSAD and you aren't holding anything over my head...
I have QERTADFGZXCVB CTRL ALT Space 123456 at my tips without moving looking or adjusting, not to mention with my G15 I also have another 10+ keybinds at my pinky, plus ctrl/alt/shift modifiers... pretty sure I have the advantage. Being a righty. But you can enjoy your Up down left right.. and... numpad? lol
I used to play FPS differently than most people, though, no arrow keys or wsad type setups. Right hand on mouse, right click is run, left click shoot. Left hand on M<>?shift. Jump ?, M alt fire or thumb mouse, <> strafe in said directions. Shift sprint, or if there is no sprint, crouch (or L for crouch), enter for throwing nades... loved it. Was ranked in a few FPS games pretty high (top 100 in SOF) but after a bunch of new games out and I got away from the competitive feel, I tried to learn WSAD cause I hated rebinding everything lol. Although now I'm competitive again with wsad in COD so whatever.
