Okay, I found what i was doing wrong. Needed a GC controller to navigate menus and change settings.

I'm considering homebrewing the Wii I got this week, if I understand corectly then once I get bootmii installed and shit I should never update the Wii system? I'm bricking it about bricking it.
was also gonna ask the above poster's question.
My wii is about 1.5-2 years old though. Would u guys recommend updating it with the latest firmware then installing homebrew? Or should i just stick to what i have and just never update the wii?
whatever you do, you don't want to install 4.2 or else you won't be able to mod it, from what I understand
from what i'm reading on the wiibrew wiki, it says that 3.0-4.2 can use the bannerbomb exploit to install the homebrew channel.
But i've also read the articles that says 4.2 bricked a crap load of people's moddied wiis. Anyone with 4.2 have any success installing THC?
Gonna hold off for a while, at least til someone can verify that updating to 4.2 won't brick my wii or make it unmoddable.
You can mod a 4.2 console if you installed everything prior and it won't brick. You can install THC on 4.2 using Bannerbomb 2.0 and HackMii's new installer.
Installed both THC and cioscorp on my Wii... now I can boot just about anything on it. Be careful though, if your serial # is LU64+, you can't modify the boot record (yet) and if you do brick it you can't recover.
The Wii could do that, but it's not implemented. And since they statically link the libraries into games, it would only work for games that were built after the functionality is implemented. That is why the current SD card loading function just copies the games: to bypass the need to update the games themselves.
I has a few questions
I have a somewhat old wii, (d2c! or whatever it was, I remember having to get a special modchip for this "newer" wii version that cost like 4x as much >_<)
and, well, I have a modchip. All of this new softmod stuff confuses me, because I don't know the difference between what I don't need (extra game loading channels--what's the point when I can just use the default one?) and what I need.
The only thing that I think I have installed on my Wii is the Homebrew Channel. (I ran the TP hack thing to install it way back when, then I lost the SD card I backed up my TP save on, then I was like, FUUUUUUUUCK, restarted on the Gamecube version (fuck wiimote zelda, why no gc controller support? fuckers), and got further than I was before, and NOW I find that old sd card <_<) but.. anyway.
I've been trying to do some reading, and find out exactly what I need. I don't have access to wireless where I am atm, and ordered a nintendo USB ethernet thing, which should be here around Wednesday I guess, so I probably wont do anything until then, since a lot seems to rely on using the internet to grab updates.
Would anyone mind taking a bit of time explaining what I should install, or, if you can just provide with a guide that isn't out of date, I'd appreciate it. I think I'm still on version 3.2something.
Thanks!
Well what do you want to do? Install Virtual console games, burn and play wii backups, store your wii backup ISOs on an external hdd and play them off that, those are all options with different apps and ways of doing it.
Are you guys really so cheap you can't go and buy the cheapest system / games on the market right now?
I buy all my Wii games, what the hell are you talking about?
Hi guys, I work for Nintendo! Don't install homebrew on the Wii and download Isos, play ROMs and emulators on the PC instead!
No, it was merely implied by your statement.
Then what was the point of my second post lol?
Well, yeah, I'm cheap. I don't have $150+ at the moment to throw at a system and a game I'm not sure I'll like. My Wii and games may as well be a $500 paperweight at the moment considering how little use it's gotten after I went through Prime, Brawl, and Zelda. I don't want to pawn them off, though. Maybe, just maybe, another game will come out that I'll have a genuine interest in.
Video stores around here don't rent DS games, or the systems for that matter. I don't even know anyone locally that owns the system so I could maybe borrow it for a few days and just bite the bullet on the game(s). It'd be awesome if Nintendo rigged the Wii with a software update that let you play demos of DS and Wii games alike for free, but until then, I'm kinda left with more shadier options. It's not a preference, though, and I do try to buy when I can. I've still got my old NES, Genesis, and such tucked away for whenever the mood strikes.
I don't think I'll ever agree with the pricing on Virtual Console titles, though. I'd love to fill my Wii with hundreds of classics, but fuck $5+ per for a couple MB of data. That's extortion.
Couple comments:
I always thought renting DS games was.. risky? Things are so damn small, kids are bound to lose them >.>. But if you have a Hastings anywhere near, I do believe they rent them.
Demos through the Nintendo Channel would be nice wouldn't it... Nintendo is slow sometimes with getting with the times.
As for the pricing, I recall dropping $80 for Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 2(IV). $5 seems like a deal to me.
