Obama: Nobel Peace Prize is 'call to action' - CNN.com
Well done by him too. He even managed to put some pressure on Obama while congratulating him as well with the whole "bigger expectations line." So he managed to tow the partisan line while not being a dick. Shame too many people in his party and their supporters can't really seem to do this at all.
I'm sorry, but if this prize didn't exist, would peace cease to exist? How about decent, self-sacrificing human beings? Or just bi-pedal mammals.
It's an award. Whatever 'meaning' it has is due to the recipients. Recipients first, brand second.
I consider the act of giving this 'Peace prize' to someone, as wishful thinking. So in a way, as it's been mentioned - it's putting more pressure on Obama. His speech was good - he was realistic about it while not being ungrateful as well.
some socialists in Norway thought it would be cool. They missed. The committee was critiziced before the "winner" was announced, that bipartizan judges could effect the outcome.
Well Thorbjørn Jageland is an old school labour party socialist. He has his agenda, and most people in Norway is now angry at him and the committee.

Edit:Obama's income decreased in 2008 - Washington Times
That was a decrease for them.Mr. Obama and first lady Michelle Obama reported a taxable income in 2008 of $2,656,902, paying $855,323 in federal taxes and $77,883 in their home state of Illinois.
We apparently have completely different definitions of rich. For 2007, the Obamas reported a significantly larger taxable income of $4,139,965.
You know what I mean, I meant to say that he's not rich as some celebrities and athletes and mega million/billionaire government officials are (liquid money speaking). Don't forget being President is like one of if not "the" hardest job in America. Anyways, I still find it cool that he's donating the prize money to charity.
Multi-millionaires aren't rich because there's still other people that make more money than them?
No, I don't know what you mean. What the hell is your point?
All I was saying, was that, if he wanted to keep the 1.4 mil, then there shouldn't be any dispute, because he's not a mega-multi-millionaire like certain governors/mayors/athletes/blahblah, considering the fact that being U.S. President can cause you to age twice as fast (very difficult job).
I predicted on this page that he would donate the money. then I heard on CNN that it was confirmed that he actually did plan on donating the money to charity (see links above + quotes). This in my opinion is an honorable move, considering 1.4 mil is ALOT of money for someone like Barack Obama, considering this is a prize he's achieved on his own accord (he didn't even know he was nominated).
Hopefully Republicans can stop riding his nuts now, and get back to doing absolutely nothing considering the fact that they are the "party of no."
The only thing is that they agree with the President on is the war in Afghanistan (where we should of surged first, instead of Sadaam's palace searching for imaginary WMDs). Democrats disagree with the war and I know they are hoping that Barack won't send more troops into it (now that he's won this award which symbolizes peace).
Sending more troops would probably be a bad idea now (even though we could maybe achieve peace faster because the threat would be eliminated faster with more troops, maybe but terrain is an advantage in that warzone). Everyone knows if we pull out like Democrats want though, that we'll have a vulnerable homeland, and we'd be seeing troops all over the place 24/7 (which is not an easy thing to get used to, especially for most people who are always crying NWO Illuminati shit).
Anyways, great job Barack, very honorable act of charity shown here, most multi-millionaire celebrities never donate so much money, I know some celebs who only donate couple tens of thousands of dollars to schools I've gone to...
I agree it wouldn't have been frowned upon as severely as someone who makes a substantial amount more if he had kept.
It has absolutely nothing to do with it being a stressful job though. There's millions of people working jobs that are just as stressful, if not, more stressful that earn a fraction of what he does.
They're the heroes, not him.
International diplomacy you got to be kidding.
Nuclear engineers.
EOD.
Any silentop field.
High voltage line electrical engineers.
Any strategic deterrence platform commanding officer.
I can go on if you like?
C'maaaan.
It's a sweet job. You have 4 years of job security guaranteed as long as you don't break the law. You make decent money and get fucking amazing international baller perks. You take month-long vacations pretty much whenever you want, and you have people whose job it is to take a fucking bullet for you 24 hours a day.
All I'm saying is, Obama's not getting any ulcers.
If you insist: Air traffic controllers.
How about the plethora of jobs that put your life at risk on a daily bases?
You know the classics. Firefighters, police, paramedics (they had to start wearing bullet proof vest because they were getting shot at too often here, yes, shooting at paramedics..)etc. It does vary greatly depending on location of course.
How about the soldiers that he sends over seas? That's not exactly a cake walk.
Doctors also make far less than you would think.
Granted it's all a matter of perspective. I know you could counter by saying that the president's life is at risk constantly and that people's lives are in his hands as well, etc and so forth.
It's just a very different thing to see it on paper than it is to deal with it face to face every day. Knowing someone may make an attempt on your life is rather different from people actually shooting at you. Trying to make changes in health care is rather different from watching a patient die or pulling someone from a car who's legs have been ripped apart.
I would say that once you reach a certain level stress is somewhat relative. There is no way that you can claim that being president is not a stressful job. I know a lot of people would rather not think about anything and not make difficult decisions and would rather be sent to war than have to be the person who sends others to war. The president has to make some very difficult decisions and constantly get bashed by millions of people for making those decisions.
Also a mentally stressful job is different from a physically stressful job so it is tough to compare being president to being a firefighter which is physically stressful.
I am not saying that there are jobs out there that many would consider more stressful than being president but when you get to a certain level of really high stress jobs, president included, it becomes relative to each person.
None of those jobs make anywhere near 400K salaries. All of them are as stressful as or more stressful than a political position, even one such as that of President - some of them are also a political position by proxy regardless of whether the user wishes to be or not. As archi, Gadritan, and zoob have all stated, the stress is a relative value; your statement only incurs such because of how baseless it is.
Thus far, Obama's job seems pretty thankful. He is getting thanked before he's really done anything yet.
