I guess I shouldn't be surprised or even disappointed anymore, but the kneejerk conservative reaction (would be the same from the liberals had someone else won) only demonstrates how fucking lazy we all are. We've got access to more information at our fingertips than any generation in history, but rather than use it we just vent our spleen along party lines.
It takes about 10 seconds of googling to read about the history of controversial choices, including the criticism that awards are often granted to people who are attempting to enact changes for peace, rather than to people who have actually 'accomplished' peace. They've been doing this for decades, and it's not an oversight. It's on the fucking wiki page, for the love of christ.
But by all means, keep getting really pissed about something you're not even trying to understand or learn about. Use it to further your political agenda and make personal attacks. Fill the conversation with incendiary partisan tirades, because that's obviously the best solution in any debate.
