I actually walked out into the middle of this march yesterday, by mistake. I live just outside the gay neighborhoods in DC, and they were walking down my street on the way down to the Mall. I had forgotten all about the march, and nearly got swept up in it on my way to the store.

    Funny story-

Since I'm so close to downtown, we get a lot of tourists. As I'm coming home from the grocery store, most of the people had already gone by, and a touristy looking couple were standing on the corner a block from my house. I swear to god I overhear the woman telling the man, "A lot of them were wearing pink tshirts, I guess it must be for breast cancer."

Yeah honey, it's a breast cancer rally. It's just a coincidence that all of the marchers are handsome, muscular, impeccably groomed young men.

But anyway was great to see so many people come out (haHA!) for the march. Maybe Congress will grow some fucking balls and actually start recognizing civil rights for everyone in this country.

Is the policy of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" inherently evil? What could be gained by a gay person in the military with everyone knowing they are gay? Less hazing?

I can never understand why this policy is frowned upon when it clearly says to the world, "We don't care about your orientation. Hell, we don't give a damn. Just mind your business and get the work done." Or does "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" implies something else that I am oblivious to all these years?

I would think that if you are gay and want to be in the military (or elsewhere i.e. work, school, etc.), you'd want to keep that knowledge to yourself and disclose it to those who you trust or want to know. Would ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" result in having a sexual orientation option box on armed forces application? Or would it just be as is: Everyone minds their own business regarding sexual orientation.

Don't ask, don't tell is actually somewhat misleading. People focus on the don't ask part, as if that is the hang up. But the real catch is the don't tell part.

    Quote from wiki:

Don't ask, don't tell is the common term for the policy regarding gays and lesbians serving openly in the U.S. military mandated by federal law Pub.L. 103-160 (10 U.S.C. § 654). Unless one of the exceptions from 10 U.S.C. § 654(b) applies, the policy prohibits anyone who "demonstrate(s) a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts" from serving in the armed forces of the United States, because "it would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability." The act prohibits any homosexual or bisexual person from disclosing his or her sexual orientation or from speaking about any homosexual relationships, including marriages or other familial attributes, while serving in the United States armed forces. The "don't ask" part of the policy indicates that superiors should not initiate investigation of a service member's orientation in the absence of disallowed behaviors, though mere suspicion of homosexual behavior can cause an investigation.
I get what you're saying about ignoring the orientation and just showing up and doing your job. Couldn't agree more. But you shouldn't have to keep being gay a secret under any circumstances. The name of the policy sounds harmless, but it's really just pure discrimination.

It'd be less of an issue if they aren't actively expelling people who actually comes out and say that they were though. But the fact is, a lot of people were actually discharged from the military because of their sexual orientation.

And there is that whole part where some people would rather not go out of their way and hiding that part of their identity. I mean it's not like they'd want to go around yelling how much they like cocks, but just going through the day to pretend to be something they're not would probably get to most people eventually.

I knew someone who couldn't even talk about what she does at home because most of her stories involve her girlfriend and if she accidentally let it slip, she would be discharged.

About 5 members of Berkeley's QSA (Queer Straight Alliance) set up 6 boxes on top of each other, put curtains in between, and proceeded to walk through them for an hour on Sproul Plaza today while blasting horrendous Tranny R&B. It was odd and annoying.

that's nothing new, I'd go straight for her myself. or at least, I would have about 10 years ago. she hasn't aged quite as well as her man imo.
