And the XI players are still kings of bitching, nobody is as loyal to a game as people who spent 3/4 hours a night camping the same (situationally) useless gear, all while saying it was the best game ever, even after each time it didn't drop.

Imo, SM in PvP is all about pressuring the opponent and controlling the fight in all of its aspects.

SM is just as in control of a fight in the air as the ground, if not BETTER due to Wing Root and Crash. Fear, Silence, Disarm, Root, Snare, Dots, Weaken Spirit, Orbs (as of v1.1) are ALL castable in air; these are the "bread and butter skills" of SM, which give it the ability to control the fight.

The only thing SM misses out on in the air (besides the gimp flight passive; MP regen is lol) is minimal DoT from the Pet's auto attack, a conditional stun, and the damage from commands (which do not scale with gear at all). Its still very capable in doing its job.

SM would be totally overpowered if current pets could fly. Dropping people out of flight whenever or wherever I feel like, every 18 seconds would be way too strong.

As it stands now, you need to be strategic on where you take the fight, like staying close to the ground or near terrain where you can drop a summon. I like that it isn't mindless and you actually have to think in combat.

As promised, a long story about doing Three Keys...

Did it with a rainbow pickup group (yayz!) - every job except Chanter and SM present, Cleric and Sorc are 35 so they're leading the way. We go in the first room to get my clear, no problems. Coming out, the Temp DCs. He comes back & aggros the now-repopped door guard & gets himself and the Cleric killed. The cleric then proceeds to RAAAGEQUIT because "we cost him 50k on soul healing". What a jackass. Get a craft ya bum. The guy even had an appropriate name - "Ignored".

Anyways we get a new cleric and do the Water Room again for him, no problems again. We hit the Wind Room and the temp keeps linking 4-5 mobs at once and getting us wiped. Finally we finish up there and go to the Fire Room. Tank DCs, we wait, he comes back and we clear thru the first and second floors. On the way to the third, the Glad misses and flies off to his doom. The temp DCs. The rest of us manage to land and kill off a couple mobs to make standing room. They both come back around, Temp DCs again, Glad gets some aggro that follows him ALL THE WAY across the second floor, flies down after him to the spot where he landed (which isn't the landing spot), and they link to us for some reason so we wipe. He can't get up so he goes all the way back around. Meanwhile the Temp comes back, meets the Glad outside for the second time, then DCs again and doesn't come back.

While waiting, we map out a plan to finish the floor since we're so damn close to the end and it's almost 2AM... the temp never comes back. Finally we decide screw it let's just do this. And we did - took our time with it, very careful pulls until we had a clear path and pull out the win. And we did better without the shitty tank than with him or the cheapskate ragequitting cleric.

Anyways, despite the fact that PUGs really suck balls, no matter what game you're playing, if you get people who are actually good or who are committed it makes a world of difference.
