Windows 8 will have 128-bit support

Microsoft's Windows 7 isn't arriving until the October 22nd, however, details have surfaced over the weekend that indicate Windows 8 will come with 128-bit support.

This information was derived from Robert Morgan's Robert Morgan - LinkedIn (Google cache), who is a senior research and development engineer at Microsoft.

Needless to say, the information has now been removed from his profile.

To quote: In it, he says he's "working in high security department for research and development involving strategic planning for medium and longterm projects."

He goes on to say his R&D projects include: "128-bit architecture compatibility with the Windows 8 kernel and Windows 9 project plan." He's also responsible for "forming relationships with major partners: Intel, AMD, HP and IBM.

A 128-bit version of Windows 8 would represent the next leap in performance. According to Microsoft's plans to release a new desktop version of Windows every three years, Windows 8 is scheduled to become available in 2012."

The fact of the matter is there do not exist any 128 bit CPUs yet, this guy is probably just part of a team ensuring that when a 128 bit cpu does hit the market they can implement support for it with some ease, if that.

Read that for a better understanding of what this really is.

Once they hit the 128 bit mark for standard transistor processors, its pretty much the holy grail. After that, it's going to be quantum computing, which will be the real holy grail of computing.

This is actually a good thing in a way. When AMD released 64bit processors Windows was hardly ready for an x86 variant of it. Sure there was the IA-64 Itanium version, but... well... lolItanium. (Sad too, I always liked that name. Architecture always seemed like there was a ton of potential as well.) It took a couple years before XP-x64 was released to terrible driver support from lazy vendors. The gaming scene was fairly on the up and up with drivers, but anything else and you were fucked.

MS getting ready for it this early in the process, regardless of hardware support, means that the transition to 128bit processors/OS/drivers/hardware won't be nearly the pain it was from going 32 to 64 bit. The hardware was all sound (and god did the K8 rape P4s, lol) but software support was terrible. Like I said, MS getting ready for it this soon hopefully will translate into a better transitory period.

    Permission denied.

What would be the impact of a 128-bit processor though? Would it make loading Firefox faster? I sure hope so.

Oh we really want to talk 128 bit? There's not much reason for it, 64 bit already provides more addressable memory space than we'd ever need. It gives the ability to have even larger addressable space, but the advantage for normal consumers to use a 128-bit system probably won't be noticeable for anyone. Sorry, your Firefox likely won't run any faster.

They really do need to stop advancing so fast D:

I'm still using 32 bit, and they're getting ready for 128 bit? 128 divided by 32 is eleven billion if my math is right. I'm eleven billion times years outdated D:

What, 16 exabytes of ram isn't enough for you people?

Does Microsoft actually expect consumers within our lifetimes to be a market for 128-bit computing? Or are they just flexing their muscles and putting the boot to hardware vendors "HAY BE READY" with this announcement?

    Consumers? No.

Servers? Ten years out from now it wouldn't shock me, and that falls well within the timeframe of Windows8 "landing" and still being a viable OS for a server.

Eh, I dunno. 16 exabytes is more data than there is currently in every computer system on the entire planet. I don't see our storage requirements expanding that much in the next 10 years. 100? Maybe. But not ten. And other than addressable memory space, there isn't much advantage going from a 64 bit to 128 bit OS, in my opinion.
