It's true that some "Yankees" wanted slavery to be abolished, but it was more about punishing the South for trying to secede, destroying their economic base, etc.

Good rule to looking at history and analyzing events is to always assume its about money and power, and NEVER about morality or ideals.

the emancipation proclamation (january 1863) only freed slaves in the confederacy, the real impact was that the UK and france diverted their support/resources from the south to the north. i believe one or both of those countries had just freed their slaves and didn't want to look like hypocrites.

this move leaves the south with resources to continue the war -> north wins. it wasn't until lincoln's re-election that the 13th amendment freed all the slaves (jan. 1865)
