even if, for the sake of argument, we were to agree that it was a word, irregardless would mean the OPPOSITE of regardless, which would just defeat your point anyway. either way, you lose on this one.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

still In and de are both negative prefixes which would make it the same as fatigable.

    and flammable the opposite.

History note: Inflammable came before flammable.

In for obvious reasons ≠ "not"

it would be silly to assume "ir" can't be the same, or cannot be used for added effect.

I never said it wasn't colloquial, and even stated I wouldn't mind it getting listed as slang.

I am saying that it is a word, that there's no harm in using it in common ever day speech, and it shouldn't be considered "incorrect" because of the amount it is used.

Slang, colloquialisms, and improper words don't just get accepted proper speech because of widespread use you dink. They are, in all rights, thoroughly and utterly incorrect and that's why they are noted as such. How you wish it were doesn't affect how it is.

@Howard: See the thing is I'm right, the tedious part is when people try to act like it isn't the case.

@Ksandra: Didn't you major in this shit too?

We should work to expedite the process of the other side shoving their foot in their mouths so we can all breathe easier.

wrong. Most of the words Shakespeare gets credit for "creating" he didn't actually create. He created maybe 4-5 words if that (eyeball comes to mind, and even though we're not sure if he created them, just he is the first time we've seen it written down). Most of them he gets credit for it BECAUSE he put it into his works and created them as mainstream words.

It is the mainstream that creates the words/changes their meanings in many ways. Most swears (bitch, n***, gay) have become what they are through mainstream. They are the slang form of the words, but if someone were to say "dude that's a female dog" every time you said the word bitch, you'd slap them across the face. Even if you were to (I have no idea why you would) use the word "bitch" in a formal business meeting, you know most if not all would instantly think of a female jerk vs. a dog.

There are so many exceptions to the rules in the English language because it's such the hodgepodge of other languages. There is no reason that newer words HAVE to follow the rules.

I enjoy the evolving of languages. It's fascinating.

Of the 3 words you used as examples, assuming the middle one is the n-bomb, only 1 wasn't originally an already established proper word meant to define something else. There's a difference between adding an extra definition to an already existing word (see: slang terms/curses like the ones previously mentioned) and using a completely incorrect word then trying to pass it off as proper (see: irregardless or other slang terms like ain't). If someone were to call a female dog a bitch they'd be using the proper definition...
