Not necessarily. And I forgot to mention IAs.

Your answer: don't do it; don't even consider it.
What do you want to do in the military?
Have you been to college? Can you afford college? Student loans a viable option?
An Iraq Tour doesn't necessarily mean you're on land however, which is the clarification that needs to be made. I have Iraqi Freedom Campaign and Expeditionary medals, and I never did anything on land. And you could easily spend longer than 6 months on a tour at sea in the Arabian Gulf - only real benefit is that you're less likely to be getting shot at.
If you join the National Guard you're almost sure to get shipped off, the Coast Guard isn't part of the DoD so you won't get shipped anywhere. Coast Guard is DoT and not really military so you'll be sitting wherever you end up at helping keep drugs and such out of the country.
If you want to join the actual military Air Force is likely your best bet of staying in country and not going anywhere, Army or Marines you'll be going to Iraq/Afghanistan for sure unless you somehow get very lucky, Navy you may not go to the Gulf but you'll be deployed somewhere. If you don't want to go to the Gulf but want to travel join the Navy if you want to sit in one spot for 4 years and not go anywhere join the Air Force.
My manager at my job is a Navy Reservist and he says all the time that the biggest lie coming from the reserves is the 1 weekend a month, two weeks out of the year. He gets shafted a bit more because he's a Chief, but yea in the last month he had to do 2 weeks in Korea for a training exercise, came back, then a week later had to do 4 days in Hawaii.
As for what to go in and not get shipped off, Airforce is probably your best bet. My brother is in the army, but he got assigned to a training division and got himself moved into the HR office for the base he's on, so the proverbial shit has to hit the fan for him to get deployed. It's a crap shoot any way you go though. Just make sure that if you do join the military, do it because you want to, not because you think you have to. If your doing it for schooling, look into what each branch offers. If your wanting a tech degree, look at navy or air force. If your thinking medical, navy or to a lesser extent, marines if you can handle the training.
You know, I'm in a position where I'm going to be graduating from college this semester and this is something that I've been playing around with but never seriously considered it. To be perfectly honest my main goal in life is to ultimately become an attorney and maybe in a distant future a judge.
The military has always had a some sort of appeal though. I greatly respect our men and women in the service and I feel like I wanna do my part. At this point in my life though, I'd only consider the military if I could enter into an officer training program where there could potentially be a future, and if i decide not to pursue that career I'd have the training and just the experience of joining the military.
Anyone able to shed some light on some of these officer programs?
A
Is America's military desperate enough yet where they'll even take fatasses such as myself? I'm debt-free, single and have 3 years of college(more than enough units for my Associates) only thing I'm worried about is my weight being an issue.
Personally I've thought about this myself several times but I don't think I could handle going overseas to fight a war I don't believe in(that's just me please no flame war). Other than that I don't think that I would have a problem enlisting. @Chico I've seen plenty of "hefty" people going to join the military. Friend of mine just got back from basic and he had lost about 80 pounds~
Fuck yeah, gonna go sign up.
I am former military and I was in the Air Force, however with my job I was stationed on Army bases a lot and worked with the Army. Being one of only like 7 Air Force members on a station of about 50k-70k Army was not bad since they didn't know the Air Force regulations you could do whatever you wanted basically. Also my living quarters were better than their junior grade officer quarters when I was just an Airman.
What you need to look into is nondeployable jobs. There are certain jobs you can do that never deploy outside of the united states. One example would be (if you can score in the 90's on your ASVAB) laser satellite technician. There is only 1 base for that and you will be at that one place for your whole career. You will never deploy and the job is not done outide that area. There are several jobs like this in the Air Force. You would need to find one you like and get it in your contract that you will do that job.
I had several females in my platoon 30-40 lbs over the max for their height coming in and they all met regulations by then end of boot. They usually won't turn people away for being overweight if they can meet fitness standards. I have heard of people getting turned away for being really overweight though - how much are we talking here?
guess I'll have to work out hardcore for the next 6 months or so and the give it a shot. My original goal was joining the Navy and hoping I got stationed in Japan(lolweaboo) but if I can get into shape I'll go for the Marines since a lot of my uncles and cousins have done tours(I have a cousin who is/was in BlackOps but I haven't heard from him in 7 years :/).
what about being skinny and underweight? >.>;
^ Shouldn't be a problem as long as you can meet the fitness test requirements. Don't know them offhand but it's a quick google search to find out.
