There are definitely better things they could be doing for the environment than banning big screen TVs...

Well, it obviously can't hurt, I'm just confused that people spend all this time and legislation on small change stuff when they should be putting more effort into better forms of actually powering the TVs, alternative fuel sources, etc. It's fine to keep adjusting the way we do things right now to help the environment, but when it comes down to it I don't think the government is giving the right kind of/right amount of push on the (imo) important projects like alternative fuel and energy. Guess I'm just tired of seeing the same old adjustment stuff rather than breakthroughs in geothermal/nuclear power, etc.

I think you guys under-estimate how much energy those TVs use. There's all kinds of legislation regarding standard appliances, this is just legislation catching up with reality(the reality of my Plasma TV using more power than my fridge washer and dryer combined).

    I love over-reacting!

Energy lobby is infinitely more powerful than the TV maker's lobby.

    lol...
they should cap how much water comes out of our faucets daily too
maybe legislate our couches to punch us in the face when we have been sitting too long
or how about we just cut the bullshit here and the gov just make us a list of exactly what things / models we should keep in our house and make that mandatory.

At least there is hypocrisy in this thread. Rights curbed in terms of national security? bad. rights curbed in terms of saving $30 worth of electricity a year? A-ok. How about rights curbed being bad as a blanket statement.

All because we refuse to adopt nuclear power due to the same hippie liberal lobby. This thread is a huge contradiction ;|

I thought that what really made california suck was its inability to raise taxes to get it out of its fiscal catastrophy.

    Partially.
The democrats want to raise taxes across the board (I'm a democrat myself, and I don't mind this.) The republicans want to solve it with budget cuts only. (Both are actually needed. Education needs a whole overhaul that's not even funny)

But the parties played chicken with each other. This is because of the 2/3rds majority needed to pass a budget in the state, so the minority party can basically hold things hostage. And compounded by the fact that there is no real competition in elections due to severe gerrymandering. Nobody has any real fear of losing their position due to their antics.

The real problem NOW is unemployment. (of the past 5 years, I've spent only 1.3 working, and the year was severe underemployment) People without jobs don't generate income tax, and they generate less sales tax due to reduced spending. With the housing market tanked and people defaulting, even the limited Prop 13 property tax income is drying up.
A 100% tax on nothing is still nothing. And without tax revenue, you basically get automatic budget cuts.

Except it's actually illegal to own a vehicle that doesn't comply with emissions regulations, and you can be fined heavily for it. If you could just cross the state border and buy a car that violated regulations, it would hurt the Cali auto industry. Most people just pay off a mechanic to pass their car, anyway.

I'll actually partially agree with you there. However, I'd say that the right-wing scaremongers are just as responsible, by fostering the suburban soccermom mentality that nuclear plant = giant terrorist nazi communist bomb in their backyard that's going to give them cancer and mutant children.
