Shooting Guns [Recreational]

So my friend owns a few guns and we plan on going out shooting this weekend. We don't really want to go to a range as simply going to some remote place and firing at random objects seems like a lot more fun (plus I'd rather not be around people with guns that I don't know.) I've done this before with a different group of friends, but this friend is somewhat apprehensive about the legality of the issue. I'm sure there is someone here who knows more than I do about this, was hoping for some insight on the matter.

Where I live we have local gun clubs you can join. They have designated areas you can shoot. That way you don't get in trouble for having a firearm where you shouldn't. You should check around the area you live to see if there is a shooting range / gun club you can use.

Would help if you described where you live, unless you're in or near a densely populated area chances are you can find someplace in the middle of nowhere.

Also, if you get caught just shoot the people that saw you, problem solved.

I live in Utah, so most of my state is nothing more than a desolate wasteland.

I don't really know Utah's laws, but as long as you're not trespassing, and you shoot toward a hillside or some other good backstop, you should be fine.

This is what I figure, although my friend is somewhat paranoid about, well, everything. It's difficult to convince him to be reasonable sometimes.

Instead of going to a known gun range where there are people who make a living running a competent range, you would rather go out in the middle of nowhere to shoot? Better choose somewhere close to a hospital or has great cell service.

Mojo, just go out to the west side of Utah Lake. Take Redwood Road South until you are well into the lake area, pass a community, and soon on the right you will see a ton of hills with blown up shit all over them because people go shooting out there all the time. It is 100% legal to shoot there and I have been there a few times myself.

Also, I don't really see how a gun range is going to be any safer. I don't know anybody at the gun range and I don't feel comfortable around people I don't know with guns.

If someone were shot there daily they wouldn't be open would they? range officers are on hand to ensure safe handling of firearms. As for accidents, you think your probability of accidental shooting goes down by going out in the woods with friends?
